Simple rules for staying sane in Seattle

1. Don't move here in the summer.

Year after year folks move here at the end of the school year. In July and August, their eyes twinkle, their skin tans, they wonder what all that rain stuff is about. By year's end,Buying a coats outlet from seller in another country. they are on the verge of breaking, transformed into vitamin D-deficient SADD-sacks water boarded by winter. Sadistically, you take pleasure in informing them that the rain will stop — next June. To avoid such agony, or the buyer's remorse that comes with the realization that the blue-skies of summer are suicide skies come February, newcomers should arrive no earlier than fall. Take the hit of dark, wet days up front, then enjoy summer's sweet mid-year lift.

2. Avoid your neighbors.

The Seattle Freeze is our famous social disease. Inoculate yourself. Don't try to make friends, better to embrace the solitude, the peace, the occasional remote wave to the unfamiliar figure next door as you both place your recycling curbside. You didn't move here for people, did you? Most everyone else moved here to get away from them. Socially, Seattleites will mostly disappoint. They're just not that into you. If you must reach out, use Skype or Facebook. That way, people come with an off-switch.

3. You can't be too utopian.

In Seattle, big ideas never die. Monorail? They're still working on it. A new waterfront? Underway. Greener than green? Oh, yeah. World class city? You betcha. Pick the candidate with the biggest ideals, the most inflated sense of mission and purpose: they usually win. We will change the world one city council resolution at a time. We prefer to hide our pragmatism behind the vanity of noble ambitions. That '62 world's fair? We leveraged our way onto the world map by selling a fantastic future, but we also sold plenty of cars, jets, and tourist trinkets. Utopia, it turns out, is good business.

4. Cultivate a superior attitude.

We're a smart city. We're home to the biggest charity in the world. We read more books. We're sustainable, serious, and hip. Portland? Stuck in the '90s. Vancouver? Hah,Every people wants to buy Cheap Arc'Teryx Outlet Sale but with best quality. they're stuck in Canada. Tacoma? We don't even make jokes about them anymore. Bellevue? Where's that? Seattle is too busy, too full of big ideas to care about anyone else. Having your nose in the air is a good way to forget that the basics are so screwed up. Seattle's public schools? Ick. Our police department? Scary. The streets? They're better in Kabul. But all of these are mere details too petty for superior minds which are set on bigger things. Like curing malaria or going global with artisanal chocolate.

5. Forget the weather report.

Cloudy. Windy. Rainy. What else do you need to know? Ignore the weather reports. Read or listen to Cliff Mass for the why, not the what. Cliff can help you understand your micro-climate, but no one can tell you with certainty what will fall from the sky and when. If you seek predictability, move to Palm Springs. If you seek a fine meteorological forensic analysis of what the hell just ruined your ill-advised backyard barbecue, you can find the answers.

6. Don't buy summer or winter clothes.

Another tip: Go for the year-round Nordstrom suit, the all-season North Face jacket, the hoodie that looks soggy wet or dry, good boots. You don't need stuff you'll wear only two days per year, like wool overcoats or sunglasses. Dress in layers. When it's 65 degrees, you can strip down. Road trip? You can't take too many coats, sweaters or blankets. Every outing should be like you're loading the car for the Apocalypse.

7. Don't think about the Big One.

Speaking of the Apocalypse, Seattle is built at the foot of a volcano in a fault zone surrounded by water. Eruption, quake, tsunami, we could get any or even all at once. Someday, Mother Nature will gob-smack us big time. It could be tomorrow, it could be 500 years from now. It's best to be in denial, so forget I said anything about Seattle being one of the most dangerous places to live in America, a modern Pompeii-in-waiting.

8. Peek through the Cascade Curtain.

The great, under-utilized sanity-izer is to flee the wetside for the dryside of the mountains sometimes. The other half of the state has things we don't have: sunshine, dust devils, big sky, stars, vineyards, Republicans. Hop over the mountains, and you'll find Montana in Cle Elum, wine country in Yakima or Walla Walla, rattlesnakes, magpies, cowboys. In the winter, there's snow and ice. You need to dry out your moss once in a while.

DCD getting healthy in time for playoffs

As the defending Division 2 champion, Detroit Country Day's boys lacrosse squad entered this pre-season as the state's top-ranked team.

The Yellow Jackets now enter the state tournament as the top-seeded regional team.

However, second-year head coach Byron Collins is not focused on rankings. He realizes the team ultimately must perform on the field, and that's the message he's given as the 2012 state playoffs kick into high gear.Buying a coats outlet from seller in another country.

"Defending to me means that you placed your focus on last year," says Collins, a former Division III college coach. "No one has been crowned state champs for this season. We, like all teams, will have to go out and earn every victory we can.

"No one will feel sorry for us, and neither do we," he says. "We are looking forward to the state tournament but we will approach each day as a day to get better as a program."

Streaky season

Country Day has struggled through a streaky season, mainly due to injuries.

The Yellow Jackets won their first five games, then lost three in a row, won two, lost two and won three. Their only in-state loss was to defending Division 1 state champion Brother Rice, and they are 10-5 on the season after 15 games.

Collins is somewhat amazed at his team's success considering all the injuries his team has suffered.

At times this season, DCD played without returning All-Americans Ahmed Iftikhar and Harrison Rosenfeld. Senior midfielder and captain Rob Prior, senior face-off artist and midfield defender Mike Vander Lugt, senior midfielder Jacob Scott, senior defender Nick Berman, face-off specialist Nick Martin and All-State defenseman Sam Resk are others who missed time due to injury.

"I'm not sure most people understand what this program has gone through this year," said Collins. "We have endured more injuries this year than any team I have ever coached.

"We started out the season as a senior laden team. But we have been playing without some of our best players for almost a month and some longer. Because of all these injures we have become a young team who had learn quickly as our expectations remain the same against our brutal schedule.Every people wants to buy Cheap Arc'Teryx Outlet Sale but with best quality.

"The remaining seniors had to raise their level of play while bringing along the young guys. We hit some bumps in the road but they have found the hard work ethic we have been looking for.

"So right now, I think we are over achieving and that is all that a coach can ask for," he said. "And that's a tribute to the remaining seniors and each of the players on our team."

Big Midwest win

Country Day gained a great deal of confidence heading into the state tournament by winning the Midwest "B" Bracket championship last weekend. The Yellow Jackets scored a pair of exciting victories over Mt. Lebanon (Pa.) and Western Reserve Academy (Ohio).

Many of those injured players participated in that tournament and are well-rested heading into states.

"We have had our ups and downs this season and that is all learning the process," said Collins. "For us, we have always focused on peaking at the end of the season. We are starting to head in that direction but we still have work to do."

Country Day begins state tournament play Friday on its home field, playing the University Liggett/Grosse Pointe North pre-regional winner.

The Yellow Jackets won five straight games en route to last year's crown, outscoring their foes, 46-15. They opened with a 12-goal win over East Lansing, then posted wins by eight goals or less to win their first state title since the 2005 season.

Collins believes all the game experience his team has gained this spring because of the injuries has added great depth to the squad.

"I think the keys (to winning) are the same for any program trying to win the states," he says. "You need a little luck here and there, a hot goalie and a team who is focused on just that — a team.

"We believe through our hard work we can create our own luck. We have the best goalie in the state, maybe one of the best in country, who is a game changer. And the players have really started to buy into the next man up, due to our injures, and do it for the greater good of the team.

"I believe we have the keys but that doesn't guarantee anything in a tournament where it's win and advance or lose and go home," he said

5 at 10: It's Masters week and Opening Day... Hooray

Gang, it's a busy week, and we're heading to Augusta in a matter of hours. We're planning on relocating the 5-at-10 satellite office there through the weekend. (And yes, since the Masters is a tradition unlike any other, we'll continue our own tradition like any other and had the Masters-only weekend editions of the 5-at-10 on Saturday and Sunday from Augusta National.) Plus, don't forget about Friday's mailbag.

From the "Talks Too Much Studios" here we go.

Masters thoughts and projections

It is the eve of the Masters, the tradition unlike any other. There is no other event like this one in the world. Period. It has forever been about the game and the pressure and course.

The greens are oil-spill slick and roller-coaster wavy, but they are the same for each of the 96 players. The grounds are scenic and pure, and, even without their trademark colors that were swiped by an unseasonably warm winter, if God crafted a sporting venue it would be Augusta National.

It is a throwback jersey and cutting-edge technology. It is a $5 lunch — Pimento Cheese sandwich, chips and a drink — for everyone, regardless if the clientele is a perfect blend of folks who believe that's a good deal or slumming.

To trifle with dollars would compromise the golf,They are particularly seen to supply the Online Canada Goose Parka Jackets Shop. and nothing good folks compromises the golf at Augusta National. Nothing.

Yes, we love this event, canada goose jackets and we could go on and on, but we won't. There's golf-type stuff to discuss.

— Ernie Els and Retief Goosen will not be in this year's Masters. The 5-at-10 has always been pro-Ernie, so it's a little sad to have the Big Easy absent for the event that he has openly discussed his longing to win. Here's hoping Els, twice a runner-up at Augusta, will find his way back next year.

— Dustin Johnson withdrew because of aback injury. Good thing we did not submit our entry too early, we were expecting big things from him at the majors this year. While cheap Fjallraven Parka Outlet Online and lightweight wraps could easily transcend seasons.
