Sam Schnabel's speech was commendable. Quite to the point of commencement, he talked about dealing with change and with coming to terms with losses great and small. Ceremonies such as this remind all of us of changes that press upon us, and how they can either confound us or serve to animate our lives one way or another. Losses can affect us deeply, some much more than others.

Thus, Schnabel's speech could be taken entirely personally, especially when a loss had been experienced quite recently, and represented more than just leaving a beloved school. So congratulations are in order for Schnabel, and good wishes to him as he goes forth.

Graduation at Burroughs is clothed in hallows, and is conducted in a grassy amphitheater in the early hours of the evening. As fashion brands like Levi's make their garments more functional, the trend is reciprocated with streetwear style influencing outdoor and ski products.

Outdoor brand Icebreaker is already on the mark. This winter, two new innovations to be added to its range are Realfleece Nano and merino-insulated soft shell jackets, designed to be worn both in the city and in the outdoors. Icebreaker creative director Rob Achten says the jackets were designed in response to customer demand for stylish, water-resistant merino jackets.

The Realfleece Nano jackets contain tiny nanoparticles that attach themselves to the merino fibre during the textile finishing process, leaving tiny pockets of air to maintain breathability. Syrian Regime Using Hired Killers to Cling to Power

When the images and details of the massacre in the western Syrian town of Houla were released, the comparisons with other horrific killings were inevitable: My Lai, Srebrenica, Rwanda. More than 100 people, half of them children and a third of them women, were killed on the evening of May 25, after Friday prayers, in the Taldou neighborhood. Some died as a result of hours of shelling by tanks and Syrian army artillery, but most were killed by death squads from the surrounding villages, thugs who slit their neighbors' throats or shot them at close range.

Killers Went From House to House

The men, some in civilian clothing and others dressed in army uniforms, went from house to house,waffen ss uniforms reported survivors like 11-year-old Ali, who told CBS News: "They came to our house at night. First they took out my father and then my oldest brother. My mother shouted: Why are you doing this? Then they shot both of them, and after that my mother. The regime in Damascus could not deny that the massacre had taken place. But Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi, parroting the government's standard position, promptly blamed the killings on "armed terrorists" and "Islamists." The Russian government, which had blocked every Security Council resolution condemning Syria, launched into a bizarre attempt to apportion the blame. The regime was apparently responsible for the assault by tanks and mortars, said Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. But the brutish murders, said Alexey Puchkov, chairman of the parliamentary committee on foreign affairs, "were definitely committed by the other side."

Igor Pankin, Russia's deputy UN ambassador, agreed: "We cannot imagine that it is in the Syrian regime's interest to sabotage Special Envoy Kofi Annan's visit to Damascus." And he is right in one respect. In PR terms, a massacre of children cannot be helpful to the Assad regime. But he was wrong in another sense, inadvertently putting his finger on Russia's growing frustration with its ally: Syria's leadership is no longer taking decisions that would make sense for a government hoping to reach a political solution to the crisis.

French Open: U.S. teen falls in fourth round

Someday, maybe soon, a fourth-round exit at a Grand Slam tournament won't feel like such a big success to Sloane Stephens.

The unseeded American teenager's best run at a major came to an end in the fourth round of the French Open yesterday with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to U.S. Open champion Sam Stosur of Australia, the No. 6 seed.

Despite the loss, Stephens, 19, leaves Paris with a promising career ahead.

“People play well with confidence, and when you're having fun and you're doing the right things, everything is all good,” she said. “So even though I lost today, I played pretty well.”

Stephens, the daughter of a former NFL Pro Bowl player and a college All-America swimmer, fell behind 5-1 in the second set against Stosur before breaking her twice to extend the match.

Stephens' exit leaves Varvara Lepchenko, who is also unseeded, as the only U.S. singles player left in the tournament. Lepchenko takes on Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic in the fourth round today.

Also at Roland Garros yesterday, women's No. 1 seed Victoria Azarenka and men's No. 1 Novak Djokovic were on courts at the same time and found themselves in major danger of losing. Azarenka was down a set and a break against Dominika Cibulkova of Slovakia, while Djokovic was on his way to falling behind Andreas Seppi of Italy by two sets.

“I'm not worried,” Djokovic said. “I'm just hoping I can wake up tomorrow, knowing that I'm in a quarterfinal, and I just want to deliver my best performance in the next challenge, forget this match today, take the best out of it. I'm proud that I've been fighting and coming back from two sets down. That's all I can say now.”
