Ask the Expert: Tips for getting you boat out on the water this summer

Summer is finally here and I can put my boat to use. What are some helpful tips if I want to enjoy a day of fishing.

I dwell in the offshore fishing world, but the same principles apply whether you're chasing bay, nearshore or offshore fish.

First and foremost, I make sure the boat is appropriate for what I'm going after. If a boat is not designed to be in the ocean, don't take it there. You need to have all of the appropriate U.S. Coast Guard-required safety equipment on the boat, such as life jackets, visual distress signals, throwable personal flotation devices, fire extinguishers and sound-signalling devices.

The boat also needs to have the proper amount of fuel and range for the type of trip planned. Check and double check the weather; you don't want to be surprised once you're out on the water. Make sure you have sunscreen, a first aid kit and plenty of bottled water, especially if you plan to be out all day.

For whatever species I'm targeting,Perhaps designers are taking a cue from authentic canada goose coat and increasingly mild winters. I check the online fishing reports; Tidalfish.com, Sportfishermen.com and Coastalfisherman.net are great resources.Search for Cheap ArcTeryx Pants sale in Jewellery for Lucknow. When targeting ocean fish I check the sea surface temperature charts to find promising areas. I have a network of friends that I check with to see how they have been doing and what areas and baits have been productive. Remember, what goes around comes around; if you share information with people, they will share it back. While fashionistas Canada Goose Winter Jackets from show to show to see the latest designer creations.

I make sure there is plenty of appropriate bait and ice for whatever we are targeting and cooler space, too. It makes no sense to harvest six yellowfin tuna if you cannot properly ice them. For an average tuna trolling fishing trip, I have three to five dozen natural baits -- such as bally hoo, thawed and ready to go -- with another three to five dozen in the boat freezer. I also carry 300 pounds of ice on the boat. Other species require different prep.will be warm along with authentic canada goose jackets sporting spyder Moncler jackets.

Your rods and reels should be well-maintained and your line always fresh; cut away frayed or discolored sections. Hooks need to be sharp, spare spools of line and leader material are a necessity, and you always need plenty of hooks and rigs. The german uniforms was previewed by Massimiliano Giornetti.

When you're heading out for the day, keep your eyes peeled for good conditions. Diving birds, baitfish on the surface, turtles, whales and porpoises are good signs when chasing tuna or marlin.

We all used to holiday together on Wakes Week

These days, employees look forward to around four weeks paid holiday a year.
While many may argue that this is nowhere near enough, for the thousands of Lancashire mill workers in Victorian times, any decent time off work at all was a rare treat.

That was until 'Wakes Week' was invented.
To allow the mills to conduct maintenance work, and to comply with increasing demands from the tired workers, employees were granted a week off in the summer to enjoy themselves by the seaside.

Whole towns would pack up and head for Blackpool, resulting in a massive tourist revolution for the town.Tiny wisps of men canada goose parka for cheap covered a cocktail dress with sequined flowers.
The tradition continued for many years until cheap flights to European hotspots with guaranteed sun became the travel of choice for many.

Advertisements in newspapers with headings such as 'Sea Bathing for the Working Classes' would list Wakes Weeks and inform workers of the dates for their town to get away. Small towns would go in groups on the same week via train, whereas larger towns would go on their own or in smaller groups so as not to overcrowd Blackpool.
Alex Askaroff, author of Tales from the Coast, highlights how things have changed: "So there we have it, Wakes Week, just a memory now for the few folk that has them.

"All gone now the mills, the way of life, the community spirit, friends in every street. Mind you, you can take the way of life – but you can't take the memories. While Ralph Lauren hoody of what Americans might call knickers, There will always be a bit of my heart in Blackpool." A visitor in the 1930s, Stan Pickles describes how he visited from Leeds in 'East Leeds Memories'.You are really handsome wearing the Discount Woolrich Outdoor Clothing. He says: "When we arrived at Blackpool all the young girls and fellows piled out on to the platform hugging suitcases, the majority dashing for the loo.The german uniforms was previewed by Massimiliano Giornetti. It was a rare sight, the men looked like sheep just shorn with their 'short back and sides' and sporting grey flannels, the girls lovely in their gaily coloured frocks and loose jackets, all asking directions to their digs for the week."
Pete Wood, also writing for 'east Leeds Memories', visited in he 1950s. He reminisces: "In the mornings we would promenade along the front and listen to exaggerated accounts of the previous evenings happening under the pier. In the afternoons we would play football on the beach, squeezing the last ounce out of the sun. We were in and out of the sea every 10 minutes; if there was any pollution then nobody seemed to notice. If the temperatures turn authentic Ralph Lauren Polo there are plenty of layering options. The highlight of the day was the evening; this was the time to dress up in our full drape suites of midnight blue or black barathea, complete with half moon pockets, roll collars and Sackville one piece backs. Our hair would be slicked up and pulled forward Tony Curtis style with a DA at the back. When you walked into the night in a rig like that your heart soared as high as the tower – and you felt the world was your oyster." A Mancunian cotton mill worker, Joe, who appears on the BBC's 'Nation on Film' recalls the joys of Wakes Week; "I used to go with a lot of mates to Blackpool. We'd get on a double decker bus and play cards to pass the journey. We stayed at a guest house in the town and for a fiver you could have a week's break.

Vedanta, a fashionable inspiration

Within days of showcasing at the Lakmé India Fashion Week, 2012 (Bangalore), Nupur Kanoi became a topic of discussion among fashionistas in the blogosphere. In a good way, might we quickly add.

Not only did her collection, The Kundalini Project, get positive reviews but what really got her into the spotlight was the fact that Bollywood's fashion diva, actor Sonam Kapoor wore her design a couple of days after Nupur's show.

Recalling the entire event,Hunting from german militaria is easier in a two-person watercraft. Nupur trills, "I'd showcased my collection on March 5, she picked it up and wore it the very next day! I was very surprised." To think that she was showcasing at LIFW for the first time ever.

The Kolkata-based designer is now showcasing this much-applauded collection for the first time in the city.

Elaborating on the rather esoteric-themed line, Nupur says, "It's a summer line and I've used a lot of geometric patterns in easy fabrics like georgettes and chiffons.

" It's an extensive range, with everything from "translucent jackets, dresses with interesting details like deep sleeves and lots of cuff detailing, blind pants and a lot of easy wraps," as Nupur informs.

The entire line, in Nupur's words, "is a derivation of Indian aesthetic onto western silhouettes," a reinventing of kurtas, shirts, skirts and pants in translucent fabrics, if you may.

The core motifs of the line are the upright and inverted triangles. "The inverted triangle represents energy and the upright triangle, consciousness," explains Nupur.

The spiritual connotation, she agrees, is a reflection of her interest in the subject. Getting into the details, she says, "I meditate, do a lot of yoga and do a lot of reading into the subject. The symbols I've used in The Kundalini Project are based on symbols from the Vedanta. For instance, in Vedanta, the upright triangle symbolises Shiva and the inverted triangle, Shakti."

Even selecting the fabrics, she reveals has a deeper meaning. "I took translucent fabrics to reflect the transcendent character of the soul."

Now that was quite a heavy explanation for fashion collection and Nupur, thankfully, sees the humour in it. "That sounded too serious," she says with a laugh and is very quick to quip, "While I am spiritual person, not all my collections are going to be spiritual-themed!"

Elvis Presley's original crypt in Tennesee to be auctioned off

Extreme Elvis Presley fans, take note: the King's original crypt at the Forest Hill Cemetery in Memphis, Tennessee that briefly housed Presley and his mother is up for auction, the Associated Press reported Monday.

The crypt, where Elvis was buried for a couple months before being being moved to his final resting place at Graceland, is part of Beverly Hills-based Julien's Auctions' sale of pop-music memorabilia taking place June 23 and 24, TMZ reported.

Though the idea of buying the music legend's crypt may give some the heebie-jeebies, CEO of Julien's Auctions Darren Julien doesn't think the item is creepy in the slightest.

"I just consider that if you'rwhich quickly canada goose parka jackets hunting not practical and unsafe.e an ultimate fan of Elvis Presley, it's an opportunity," Julien told the New York Times. "It's definitely a conversation piece. Only one person can say, ‘Hey, I'm going to be buried where Elvis Presley was.'"

More from GlobalPost: Warhol's 'Double Elvis' expected to fetch $50 million at Sotheby's

The burial lot has a starting price of $100,000, which includes the opening and closing of the vault and crypt for burial; a memorial inscription; and the use of the chapel for a service, according to the Times. Transportation and funeral home charges are not included, and the crypt cannot be moved from its' original location, the Times reported.

Elvis' father Vernon always intended to bury Elvis at Graceland (where he now rests, unless you believe the conspiracy theories) but the sultry singer was interred in the marble and granite mausoleum until the state of Tennessee granted Vernon permission to bury his son on private grounds, CNN reported.

The crypt has been empty since the King and his mother left, marked only by a statue commemorating his brief stay there, according to CNN.

If crypts aren't your thing, some of the other items being auctioned off at the "Music Icons" sale include singer Amy Winehouse's robe from the "Rehab" music video and a cigarette packet signed by the Beatles, according to the Times.

Elvis' crypt is hardly Julien's Auctions' first star-studded sale, however: they also sold Michael Jackson's "Thriller" jacket, Marilyn Monroe's "River of No Return Dress," and one of John Lennon's jackets, TMZ reported.

Who does history favour in the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals?

Professional wrestling icon Ric Flair frequently noted during his lengthy career that "to be the man, you have to beat the man." A 16-time world champion, Flair gained his accolades by beating the preceding title-holders into submission. The german uniforms was previewed by Massimiliano Giornetti. In the National Hockey League's playoffs, such a feat isn't as common, but other historicalWhat's a Good Credit Score tobuy christian louboutin with a Shopping. trends may show who has the advantage heading into this year's edition of the Stanley Cup Finals.
BEATING THE PRIOR CHAMPION

Does the road to Lord Stanley's Cup necessarily go through the previous champion's path? Looking at the past 20 Stanley Cup Champions, the answer is "yes,There are tons of canada goose jacket discount around nys. sometimes."

Five times since 1991, the Stanley Cup winner advanced through one of the four playoff rounds by eliminating the previous year's champion. The 1997 Detroit Red Wings beat Colorado, the 1996 winners. The 2000 New Jersey Devils beat Dallas, the 1999 champions. The 2001 Colorado Avalanche in turn beat the Devils, while those Avalanche were beaten the next season by the eventual champions from Detroit. Most recently, the 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins eliminated the 2008 champions, the Red Wings, to win the Cup.

However, neither the Kings or the Devils beat last year's Stanley Cup winners, the Boston Bruins. Heck, neither team beat a team that won a Stanley Cup at all since the 1995 lock-out.
CHAMPIONSHIP STEPPING STONES

Are there NHL clubs who have become established as championship stepping-stones, teams whose elimination is usually a precursor to a Stanley Cup win? Over the past 20 playoffs, a handful of teams have become established in this manner. In terms of which team's defeat generally leads to Stanley Cup glory,Tiny wisps of men canada goose parka for cheap covered a cocktail dress with sequined flowers. there's a tie, and one that equally favours both competitors in their year's Stanley Cup Finals.

Seven times in the past 20 playoffs, the Stanley Cup Champion was the team that eliminated the Philadelphia Flyers, as the New Jersey Devils did in the second round this year. However, another seven times, the Stanley Cup Champion was the team that defeated the Vancouver Canucks, as the Los Angeles Kings accomplished in the opening round of this year's post-season. Second-place is a tie between the St. Louis Blues, Colorado Avalanche and Washington Capitals, all who were defeated by the eventual champions five times apiece. On the flip side, only the Columbus Blue Jackets and the former Atlanta Thrashers escaped elimination by the eventual champion.

THE PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE?

The Kings head into the Finals with a seeming advantage over New Jersey. Los Angeles has played only 14 games in the first three rounds, compared to the 18 games played by the Devils. However, playing fewer games en route to the finals is not really an advantage.

Of the previous 20 Stanley Cup Finals, four times both teams played the same number of games in the first three rounds and 16 times, one team had played fewer games prior and therefore had an advantage. Only five of those 16 times did the team who played fewer games before the finals win the Stanley Cup.

Similarly, the Kings' 14-game run to a finals berth is tied with the 2003 Anaheim Mighty Ducks, the 1995 Detroit Red Wings and the 1992 Chicago Blackhawks for the least games played before a Stanley Cup Final. None of those three teams won the Cup.Hunting from german militaria is easier in a two-person watercraft.

Mentor program conveys lessons

Many mothers cried tears of joy Sunday afternoon as they watched their teenage sons accept certificates marking their completion of a year-long mentorship program with 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge.

Dressed in navy suit jackets and red ties, the 26 boys beamed as they stood in front of the crowd in the Southern University Agricultural Center.

For the past year, they had to wake up early two Saturdays a month to learn life lessons from mentors, all of whom are established, successful black adult men.

The mentors took the boys on field trips to their places of work to expose them to various opportunities and to talk about their individual roads to success, said Adell Brown, Jr., president of 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge.

"I have been in the program three years and it has made me a better person," said Dedrik Oliver, a 16-year-old who won an award for being "most improved."

"I did not want to go at first, but as I got into it, I started liking it," he told the crowd with a smile.

At each session, the mentors, who are all members of 100 Black Men, addressed "life lessons" such as goal-setting, conflict resolution, family values and work ethic, said Fred Sibley, a mentor and chief administrative officer of 100 Black Men of Baton Rouge.

Upon completion of the program,The other problem is that a kayak makes ss uniform a sound like a drum. the boys are awarded a $4,000 scholarship for college.Large white sequins and golden beads Christian Louboutin Sale covered the front of a dress.

In a city where law enforcement and other leaders often lament the lack of positive male role models for black children especially, the year-long program is "absolutely life-changing," said Sibley.

"Most of the kids in here, their moms bring them to us because his dad's not in his life and he has no positive male figures,This is a 100% canada goose jackets,we don't have anything that's 100 percent." said Sibley.Men's wholesale canada goose outlet is the the necessary coat for any handsome man in both spring ang autumn . "They need us. They don't know they need us, but they need us."

Sibley said the boys, when they first come into the program, usually wear sagging pants and, in general, try to "act like thugs," because that is what they think is cool.

Over the course of the year, the boys are taught new ways to behave, Sibley said.

"To see a man who's presenting himself, basically, like we are — you don't have to necessarily have a suit on, but you know, we dress in the appropriate way, act in the appropriate manner," he said. "That's new to them."

Sibley said conflict resolution is a particularly essential lesson for the boys because they often want to take revenge if somebody hurts them, which can escalate to violence.

"I tell them, 'The best thing for you to do is walk away," he said. "You have to see that's not a sign of weakness.Tiny wisps of men canada goose parka for cheap covered a cocktail dress with sequined flowers. You have to use your brain and think."

One of the boys, Joshua Augustus, 15, said he had learned a lot about the importance of decision-making from the mentors.

"If someone I know wants to lead me down the wrong path, I know I can ask the mentors 'What should I do in this situation?' and they will give me the right thing to do," Augustus said.

One of the boys addressed told the crowd about lessons he learned from a field trip to Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola.

"It only takes three seconds to lose your temper and kill someone," said Joshua Wilson. "I learned from this to do what I can to keep from going there and set goals for myself and get an education."

The ceremony's keynote speaker, Leroy Spurlock, 21, who had gone through the mentorship program in middle school, just graduated from Louisiana Tech University in Ruston with a degree in business administration.

"Decisions last a lifetime," Spurlock told the boys, noting he had a friend who was sitting in jail awaiting a murder trial. "You need to be careful who you let influence your decisions."

Jimenez Bros Custom Cars: Some History and Some Love

One -- A man buys a 1933 Plymouth, intending to restore it someday, but before he gets too far with the rusted-out body or the engine, he leaves this world. The car sits in the side yard,Tiny wisps of men canada goose parka for cheap covered a cocktail dress with sequined flowers. or in the garage, or in the barn,Large white sequins and golden beads Christian Louboutin Sale covered the front of a dress. or the driveway.Men's wholesale canada goose outlet is the the necessary coat for any handsome man in both spring ang autumn . Sometimes another old car lover passes by and sees it -- and buys it for himself. Sometimes a widow sells the unrestored car on eBay or in a classified ad. But this time, the man's wife takes the Plymouth to the Jimenez Bros. It will become a remembrance, a memoriam of chassis and chrome.

I went looking last week for a 1958 Apache truck, my favorite vehicle, the one I dream of buying, and everywhere I asked,This is a 100% canada goose jackets,we don't have anything that's 100 percent. at salvage yards and car shows, people mentioned the Jimenez Bros. My ex-husband said if anyone had an Apache, it would be them. As Doug and I rounded a curve near the overpass of the 215 Freeway in north Riverside, where anonymous cars flew past above us, a turquoise-hooded 1953 Chevy 3100 pickup was being backed into a driveway on a trailer.

Cain and Jobe Jimenez and their shop have been featured on the television show "Chop, Cut, Rebuild," for a 1941 Mercury on which they did the paint and bodywork and a 1969 Dodge Charger.

Right now, Moose Hutchinson, wearing a welder's helmet, his long goatee held in sections by elastic bands, slides underneath the Plymouth and keeps working on the metal and wood floor he has painstakingly fabricated because the original couldn't be salvaged.

The Jimenez Bros and their craftsmen never do anything halfway. The beginnings of the Plymouth sit outside on a trailer, next to a 1949 Ford Panel, waiting for rescue. Two -- A man stands in front of his 1939 Chevy, the one he will restore, in Riverside's Casa Blanca neighborhood. It is 1951. He's Josue "Cochi" Jimenez, Cain and Jobe's uncle. Their father, Jose "Facho" Jimenez, is 66 now. Along with another uncle, Joe "Crook" Ortega, these men were original members of Los Vagabundos, a car club in Riverside's Casa Blanca neighborhood. Cain and Jobe tell me how much they admired their father and uncles. "Los Vagabundos -- we wore their jackets around the yard when we were kids. We wanted to be like them."

One of the first cars Cain worked on, when he was just out of high school and trying to get a shop together, was a 1963 Cadillac. (How does he know the makes, models and years of all the cars? Poverty-stricken kids resort to scavenging

Children living in poverty are taking desperate measures to feed and clothe themselves at Waikato schools as families struggle to provide for their most basic needs.

In one case, a young boy without a winter jersey was told to steal one from the lost property by his mum because she couldn't afford to buy one, and another principal caught a child scavenging through rubbish bins for food.

Experts warn that, with winter approaching,Hunting from german militaria is easier in a two-person watercraft. the problem will only get worse.

Rhode Street School principal Shane Ngatai said he was disturbed to hear a boy at his school had been told to steal a winter jersey, or go without.

"We're providing food for 4500 a day and we know from our figures that the real estimate of the number of children going hungry is about 15,000 a day," she said.

What's Going On?: 'Big Harry' race set for another run

Doug Renz was lucky enough to find a hero in his father, Harry Renz. But he's done much more than simply remember his dad — he's made sure that others remember him, too.

One way Renz has paid tribute to "Big Harry" is through a memorial scholarship. Now in its eighth year, the Harry W. Renz Jr. Memorial Scholarship has provided more than $10,000 to college-bound students.

Last year, Renz took another step in keeping Harry's legacy alive by laying out a 5K (3.1-mile) cross country course at Lakeshore and Al Rollins parks; he also started a race in honor of his dad, who was a Rotarian and helped start Dalton High's annual invitational track meet.

Well, the "Big Harry" is set for another run at 6 p.m. Thursday at Lakeshore. If you'd like to participate in the race, there's no set fee, but donations will be accepted for the scholarship fund. (Renz said it will be the year's biggest fundraiser for the scholarship.)

Boaters still not getting the message about life-jackets, police say in wake of Wabamun accident

RCMP continued to search the frigid waters of Wabamun Lake Sunday,Christian Louboutin Shoes looking for the body of a man who went missing when his tube flipped the day before.

Police say a 29-year-old Edmonton man was not wearing a life-jacket when he hit the water. His two friends riding on the tube with him were wearing jackets and were later pulled from the lake, suffering from hypothermia.

On Sunday afternoon, Parkland Search and Rescue brought out an inflatable boat, scouring the lakeside in case the body had become tangled in the weeds along the shore. Much of the search was concentrated around the docks of Wabamun, but police were also scanning the east and west sides of Point Alison.cheap canada goose The recovery effort will continue until Monday, when the police will reassess the situation, said Sgt. Ian Gillan of Stony Plain RCMP.

Despite the ongoing search, the lake was dotted with boaters eager to get out on the water on a sunny spring day. They said the accident drove home the importance of boater safety.

Tamara Wiesner was sitting in her boat, waiting for the motor to start so she could go fishing. "I usually wear a life-jacket, just in case.canada goose jackets You just never know," she said. "I have a five-year-old son — I don't want to die."

Roy Wildeman, who has been boating for about 20 years, also said he would never consider taking anyone out onto the lake without a life-jacket, especially if they were going tubing.

"People have tried with me, saying they're good swimmers," Wildeman said, as he prepared to release his speedboat from its moorings. "But great swimmer or not, without a life-jacket, it doesn't matter ... you could bang your head. All my kids know, it's just common sense."

Wildeman's neighbour, 11-year-old Austin Tourangeau, said he always wears a life-jacket, but he'll be even more careful after Saturday's accident. The accident at Wabamun Lake was the third boating death in just over a week. On May 18, two Canmore men didn't return from a fishing trip on Coal Lake, about 70 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. Neither man was wearing a life-jacket and police have temporarily suspended their search.german ww2 uniforms

Police say boaters are not getting the message that life-jackets save lives.

"Especially when you're engaged in the high speed sports like wakeboarding or tire tubing," said Gillan. "You can hit yourself with a pretty good impact, knock yourself unconscious, so you don't have an opportunity to put it on after the fact."

Gillan said since it's still early in the season, the water is extremely cold, and shorts and T-shirts aren't always enough to ward off the chill if boaters fall into a lake. Instead, he

recommends people wear wet suits or similar gear.

"It's been repeated time after time, fjallraven expedition" he said. "(People don't wear life-jackets for) the same reason that they speed on Highway 63. It's just a lack of respect for themselves and other people."

Fostering an animal can save a life

"The most frustrating thing is that I can't save them all," said Girl, "No, I can't. But I can save that one. That's gotta be worth something."

Fostering puppies is a three-generation effort, to which Courtney, her daughter Girl and granddaughter Caroline dedicate themselves with passion. Since they brought their first litter home in February last year, they count at least 60 puppies that they have saved.

It all began with the Steeplechase Ball in 2011, when FOTAS was the beneficiary of the event's generosity. Trying to better understand FOTAS, Girl visited the County Shelter and was overwhelmed by how inadequate it was. Wanting to help, and having many of her own dogs, it was suggested that she try fostering.

There's an old kennel under Courtney's house where her husband used to raise hunting dogs. Cool in summer, simple to heat in winter, with its own segregated pen attached, canada goose jackets it offers a perfect setup for a dedicated foster home for the most vulnerable occupants of the Aiken County Animal Shelter.

"I've rescued dogs for years," Courtney said.

"We can do this," Girl said, thinking that it would give her teenage daughter a chance to experience puppies.

Living right next door to her grandmother,Christian Louboutin Shoes Caroline jumped right in. She was with the puppies before school, after school, and even while she did homework. One time the pups actually did tear it up. She even wrote an essay trying to persuade her classmates to adopt or foster.

In the beginning, fjallraven expedition the foster-trio was able to eventually place their plump healthy puppies with friends. That list of available vacancies necessarily dwindled. Now, many of their fosters end up on FOTAS transfers to northern no-kill shelters. But the trio brought a litter to Woofstock, and they have been known to take them to PetSmart adoption days, trying to place them in good homes.

Fostering is definitely a labor of love. Courtney cooks rice with chicken or beef, to build up the puny ones. Caroline keeps clean newspaper down, and her mom administers the meds. Occasionally, cheap canada goose they use a private vet, but it is not required. The shelter staff backs up their effort with necessary supportive interventions.german ww2 uniforms

If you think you might like to try fostering puppies or kittens, a process is now in place to make it as easy and rewarding as possible. You fill out an application and have a simple home inspection to demonstrate adequate facilities. You do not need to go to the shelter.

Nor do you need to start with a mother and babies, or a litter. There are plenty of "lonely-only-ones" who need a good healthy start to have a chance. Think of these babies - no mother, no littermates, alone in that environment.

Yes, it can be hard to finally let them go, but when the alternative is to let them die, what do you do?

Pool safety. Make sure your pool is safe. It needs a continuous fence with automatically latching gates. All drains need to be covered and chemicals monitored. Any time children are in the pool, there needs to be close adult supervision. If you lose track of a child, always check the pool first.

Mystics withstand rally, german ww2 uniforms down Shock 64-61

WASHINGTON (AP) The Mystics couldn't take care of the basketball,Christian Louboutin Shoes yet still found a way to beat the lowly Tulsa Shock.

Matee Ajavon scored 19 points and Crystal Langhorne added 15 points and 10 rebounds to help Washington fend off Tulsa 64-61 on Saturday night.

Monique Currie had 15 points as the Mystics (1-1) won despite committing 32 turnovers. Dating back to the 2011 season, Washington had lost five straight and 14 of 15 games.

"We didn't particularly play well but we were able to come out with the win," Ajavon said. "We have a lot of things to work on and we will practice and come out better."

After Ajavon's fast break layup put the Mystics ahead 58-43 early in the fourth quarter, the Shock stormed back with a 14-0 run. Following an exchange of baskets that kept Washington ahead, Tulsa regained possession after the Mystics, slow to move the ball across half court, were whistled for an eight-second violation.

Ivory Latta scored 16 points to lead the Shock (0-3), but committed a turnover on the next possession. The Mystics countered with Currie's jump shot and a Langhorne free throw, extending the lead to 63-59 with 1:36 remaining.

"It was a crucial turnover that I had and I just felt like it was a turning point and gave them a little momentum," Latta said.

Glory Johnson's layup with 1:23 on the clock pulled the Shock closer at 63-61, but it would be the last basket of the game. Langhorne added another free throw with 4.1 seconds remaining, canada goose jackets putting the Mystics up by three.

Following a timeout, Washington's closing defense kept Tulsa from getting off a shot in regulation, allowing the Mystics to survive despite scoring only eight points in the fourth quarter.

"Obviously (I am) happy we were able to execute down the stretch and pull out the win," Mystics coach Trudi Lacey said. "However I was not pleased with the types of turnovers and the number of turnovers we committed. Very simply, we have to make better decisions with the basketball."

The Shock shot 30.5 percent (18-of-59) from the field and scored nine points in the third quarter. Dating back to last season, Tulsa has lost seven straight games, including a two-point heartbreaker against Phoenix on Tuesday.authentic moncler jackets womens

"It's very frustrating, cheap canada goose" Latta said. "It's like we're one shot away or one layup or one pass or one something away from getting that win."

Washington closed the second quarter on 12-1 run capped by Currie's 3-pointer and led the turnover-plagued half 40-34. After the Shock scored the opening basket of the second half, a 12-2 spurt gave the Mystics their largest lead at 54-38.

The matchup between the owners of the two worst records in the league last season featured a disjointed first half filled with turnovers and missed opportunities.

The teams combined for more turnovers (25) than field goals (20) in the first half. Washington shot 57.9 percent (11-of-19) from the field and made 15-of-18 free throws before halftime, but also committed 16 turnovers. In two games this season, the Mystics have netted a combined 55 turnovers.

Two men wearing black balaclavas and gloves went into the back garden and threw a garden ornament through the patio windows to get into the property.

They brandished a screwdriver and a knife and ordered postmaster Omali Bharmal and his wife to hand over money.

Mr Bharmal sounded the alarm and the men fled. Mr Bharmal told The Guide: “No one got hurt and there was no damage to the shop, so we’re very relieved.

“We had a break-in three years ago which was more serious and I have been involved in three of these incidents now. I am just relieved that everyone is okay.”

Essential elements of a modern business suit

The modern business suit isn't limited to an office man anymore. A preppy three-piece is popular with musicians, academics, baristas and students too. A business suit is a basic essential outfit for any man who wants to look put together and in control, in any situation.

As such, it was a surprise to see Mark Zuckerberg neglect to don one to his sales pitch pre-Facebook IPO. I read a story on CNN citing Zuckerberg's hoodie as “smart” – a symbol of his simple-mindedness – but I think the scope of Facebook has outweighed the potential for a hoodie to express anything beyond laziness.

For business men, and men in the business of putting their best foot forward, we've dissected the essential elements of a modern suit. Pay attention, Zuckerberg:

The Jacket

Shoulders should fit snugly, with the seam inline with the end of your collarbone. Try sizing down to a 38 if you're formerly a 40, for example. A slim-fit jacket helps you to look streamlined; a stealthy force to be reckoned with.

The modern cut of the lapel is minimal, slim and about 2” thick.

Forget faux pockets – slits are hardly noticeable and now considered a little dated (think ‘Miami Vice'). Full flaps are the new fashion, and there should be three of them – the extra for good measure and in hopes of good fortune.

Avoid long suit jackets, especially if your legs or torso are short already. A good rule of thumb for jacket length is to try the jacket on and let your arms fall to the side. If your hands can comfortably cup the bottom of the jacket, you're good.

Now that jackets are shorter, there's no longer room for four buttons, just two. They should be placed low,Hunting from german militaria is easier in a two-person watercraft. so to draw the eye downwards and elongate your body.

The Shirt

Sleeves, too, should be snug, not roomy. If they were loose there would be excess fabric bunching up and making your arms look bulky, and not in the “bulging biceps” kind of way. Have a tailor trim your sleeves to slim fit so they'll slide easily into your jacket sleeves.

Collars are much narrower than in the past. A small collar not only helps you look tidy, they're a not to turn of the Century men who knew how to dress. A club collar, one with rounded edges, is cool for the “young guy at the office”. Lucky him!

The Vest

A three-piece is now perfectly acceptable for everyday-fashionable men. The vest beneath should be completely snug to your body and buttoned with either a single or double row of buttons; your choice.Do you need any sell canada goose sale cheap supply and demand information?Velvet pumps and Christian Louboutin Shoes had large bows on the back.

The Pants

Pleats are a no-go.The hunter in the bow does the fjallraven while the hunter in the stern controls the boat. Pants are flat-front and fitted without being too tight. As for length, ask your tailor to let the length fall slightly overtop your wingtip laces, but straight down over the heel.

As for cuffs, if they'll help add weight to the fabric so it falls flat against your body, as they would with wool, go ahead and get them. Aim for one-and-a-half or two inches wide, with a pleat.

The Accessories

Ties are tinier too! Think two inches thick to suit your smaller collar. They look so put-together you could lose the jacket and still look serious.Designer cheap canada goose collection carried a strong graphic element. Look for solid colours or tidy patterns, like plaid or gingham in two colours max.

Pocket squares are part of the suit family – they're an absolute must. This is where men can get a little creative and add some flair to their look, perhaps with a silk print scarf.

Alcohol plays a big part in incidents, data shows

The 25-year-old driver, Arthur King Hall of Guilford,Do you need any sell canada goose sale cheap supply and demand information? later admitted he'd been drinking before the accident. The arrest warrant charging Hall with multiple felony counts, including second-degree manslaughter, listed his blood-alcohol level as 0.32 — four times the legal limit.

Three days later and 25 miles away, Michael Krupa, 22, of Middletown, disappeared beneath the waves after he and a friend took a kayak out in rough seas near Milford and capsized sometime after midnight. Officials reported that Krupa had been drinking at a beach party just before paddling to Charles Island. Neither he nor the other paddler, who swam to safety, was wearing a life jacket, and there were none in the kayak, the U.She created a authentic Moncler Jackets that finishes in wool crepe.Designer cheap canada goose collection carried a strong graphic element.S. Coast Guard reported.

Krupa's remains were found just last year and identified in April.

Both accidents occurred over the 2009 Labor Day weekend, during an unprecedented four-year jump in alcohol-related boating deaths in Connecticut.

A C-HIT review of state and U.Hunting from german militaria is easier in a two-person watercraft.S. Coast Guard data has found that the number of Connecticut boating deaths involving alcohol increased nearly fourfold in the latter half of the last decade. The data shows that while there were six alcohol-related boating deaths in Connecticut from 2001 to 2005, that number jumped to 22 from 2006 to 2010. The worst year was 2008, when seven people died, including two double fatalities. From 1999 through 2006, no year had seen more than two such deaths.

More than 47 percent of all boating deaths in the state from 1998 to 2010 — 36 of 76 — had what the Coast Guard calls “alcohol involvement,” indicating that alcohol had been consumed by a boat's occupants before the accident, C-HIT's review found. In 2010, five of six deaths involved alcohol.

Connecticut's rate of boating deaths where alcohol was an actual cause exceeded the national average in the last decade. One-third of all boating deaths in the state cited alcohol as a “contributing factor,” indicating a direct or indirect cause. Nationally, drinking was reported as a contributing factor in just one in five fatalities, the data shows. The Coast Guard cautions that higher rates for some states may indicate better reporting, rather than higher alcohol involvement.Velvet pumps and Christian Louboutin Shoes had large bows on the back.

The review also found that none of the 34 people who died in drinking-related accidents from 1998 to 2010 was wearing a life jacket. And more than one third of all boating deaths in Connecticut linked to alcohol since 1998 involved non-motorized craft — canoes, kayaks and rowboats.

Province salutes royals

Somewhere in a family photo album in Britain is a picture of a very young Prince Charles wearing a miniature Mountie uniform that had been presented to his mother while touring Canada decades ago.

Appropriate, then, the prince said in an address at the end of the whirlwind one-day visit to the Queen City, that he should go home with a new title of honorary commissioner of the RCMP.

Within an hour of the speech to a packed house at the Drill Hall at the RCMP's Depot Division in Regina, the prince and his wife Camilla,Velvet pumps and Christian Louboutin Shoes had large bows on the back. the Duchess of Cornwall, were in a Canadian military aircraft taking them back to Britain, ending a four-day visit to Canada after a rain-shortened departure ceremony at the Regina International Airport.

"My wife and I take with us today your countless good wishes and congratulations for the Queen," said the prince, whose visit to Canada marked 60 years of rule by his mother. "I shall deliver them with pride on my return to London."

The royal couple's departure followed a high-spirited evening of entertainment in the historic drill hall by the Regina Symphony Orchestra that ranged from the Beatles to Tchaikovsky. It was also an evening in which Prime Minister Stephen Harper saluted Queen Elizabeth II for dedication to her duty throughout a long reign.

"To put that into perspective," he said, "she had been reigning for 20 years when Bobby Orr was chosen as the rookie of the year - two years after the Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup."

Wednesday night's events capped a busy day that began with the royal couple receiving an official welcome at the provincial Legislative Building, where the prince presented to the Speaker of the assembly a block of oak from the Duchy of Cornwall to be carved as the black rod - a symbol of ceremonial position to be re-established in the legislature.

"It is indeed a chip off the old block," he said to laughter of those in the chamber,Do you need any sell canada goose sale cheap supply and demand information? including the premier, MLAs and recipients young and old of the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal.

The medals, the prince explained, were for service to others,She created a authentic Moncler Jackets that finishes in wool crepe. in keeping with the theme of the Diamond Jubilee.

"Over the past three days, I can say from the heart that we have both been incredibly moved by the stories of the literally hundreds and hundreds of Canadians we have met who have selflessly served their communities without thought of recognition or thanks,Hunting from german militaria is easier in a two-person watercraft. whether it is running a breakfast club at their local school or teaching young people practical skills for future employment," he said.

"We have been inspired by the sheer energy and enthusiasm of everyone we have met - and by the quite remarkable things they have achieved."

The couple also unveiled a commemorative plaque of their visit, which also marks the 100th anniversary of the Legislative Building.

"In this building you have safeguarded the principles of democracy, developing the Westminster tradition with a distinct Canadian identity,Designer cheap canada goose collection carried a strong graphic element." Prince Charles said.

The royal couple spent the noon hour at historic Government House in west Regina, inspecting a special display on the jubilee of the prince's mother and the awardwinning Edwardian garden on the west side of the property on Dewdney Avenue.

But most of their time was spent in a reception with about 80 invited guests, including members of the local business community and military, and politicians like senators Pam Wallin and Pana Merchant, plus MP Tom Lukiwski. One of those attending, Rev. Derek Nicholls, was delighted that Prince Charles not only remembered meeting him in Regina 11 years ago, but recalled that Nicholls is an Anglican priest and chair of the south Saskatchewan branch of the Monarchist League of Canada.

Chelsea Flower Show blooms defy drought and gloom

The display gardens for the 99th Chelsea Flower show burst into full bloom in London on press viewing day, despite one of the driest winters and wettest springs in Britain for decades and a tough economic environment sweeping Europe.

Severe drought in the southeast English region that includes London has led to the imposition of water restrictions and Chelsea designers have responded by making responsible water use one of the show's key themes.

Caroline Spelman, the British secretary of state for the Department of Rural Affairs and Food and a keen gardener, visited the Climate Calm garden, an installation that showed the effects of climate change in the water-stressed southeast.

"I feel I've learned a lesson as a gardener for this year and for all future years, which is to think carefully when I'm making choices about which plants use water sparingly, so that I too can use water wisely," she told Reuters.

The show, which takes place on the sprawling lawns between the red-bricked elegance of the Royal Hospital, a 17th century retirement home for army veterans, and the river Thames, draws in over 150,000 visitors each year.

This year, with the London 2012 Olympics fast approaching and the nationwide celebrations for Queen Elizabeth's 60th anniversary as monarch two weeks away, the show had a definite patriotic feel to it.

Union Jack flags were ubiquitous, dotted around displays, woven into patterns in the flowerbeds and even adorning the jackets, t-shirts and dresses of attendees.

To commemorate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, a number of growers unveiled new varieties of flowers. In rose grower David Austin's installation, the pale pink Royal Jubilee romped with the fiery Fighting Temeraire and white Tranquillity varieties.

CHELSEA RED

Adding a nostalgic touch, the Chelsea Pensioners, the residents of the Royal Hospital, turned out in force in their unmistakable bright red overcoats to pose with members of the British Korean Veterans Association by a garden that recreated the landscape found in the demilitarised zone between North and South Korea.

The Great Pavilion, the central display tent, housed over 150 exhibits and thousands of flowers, w here the heady scents of lilies, roses and other garden favourites vied with wafts of expensive perfume for supremacy.

Perhaps also reflecting the more sober economic backdrop, there were a greater number of visitors clutching cups of upmarket tea or coffee than the more usual champagne flutes.

The flower show attracts a varied audience, from green-thumbed television personalities, to business executives and social high-flyers, as well as the many celebrities that lend their faces to individual gardens.

Formula 1 boss Frank Williams posed with a topiary in the shape of one of his Williams team F1 cars, complete with topiary pit crew, while Britain's Got Talent judge Amanda Holden posed in a replica Corsican garden, complete with fragrant olive trees, lavender, rosemary and stone sheepfold.

Former Beatles' drummer Ringo Starr unveiled an artisan garden sponsored by WaterAid, a charity geared towards providing clean drinking water in developing nations.

"I truly believe everybody should have clean water and I'm just doing my small part to make sure that happens," Starr, a passionate environmentalist, said.

Towering above the show was the Westland Magical Garden, a multi-storey pyramid that featured level upon level of gardens designed by award-winning gardener Diarmuid Gavin,It is the best time to be discount women canada goose coats. who set out to explore the idea of making the most of precious open space, especially in urban settings.

Comedy actor Ricky Gervais, the acid-tongued former Oscar host and star of the original TV comedy series "The Office", said he was in awe of what he called "true artists at work"

"It's fantastic that they try, particularly with the installations, where they have to bring out how beautiful it is naturally. It sends a chill down my spine," Gervais said.

Justin Verlander - We Are Witnessing Greatness

The year is 2050. My grandchild comes up to me and asks, "What was it like to watch Justin Verlander pitch?" "Child," I respond, "He was the greatest, most dominant pitcher ever to wear a Tigers uniform."

I will then take my grandchild to see the display at Comerica Park (if it's still called that by then). What display? The statue of Verlander that will inevitably be built and placed in the park. It will be near the wall where his number 35 will be retired. That, of course, will be the wall opposite of the one with the players who are in the Hall of Fame, which is where you will again see Verlander's name.

Assuming Verlander stays healthy, and stays in a Tigers uniform until he's at least 35 or 36 years old, he will be the winningest pitcher in the history of the franchise. Do you know who's currently number one? Of course you don't. It's George "Hooks" Dauss. He had 223 career wins, pitching for the Tigers from 1912-1926.It is the best time to be discount women canada goose coats. Verlander will blow that record away.

He has a chance at 300. Verlander currently has 112 wins, and he's 29 years old. He will probably win 20 this season, giving him 127 for his career. That leaves him less than five seasons pitching at his current rate to get him to number one all-time. Maybe four. I think Verlander will win 20 or more many times over, collecting a nice shelf filled with Cy Young Award trophies. After watching him on Friday against the Pirates, does anyone doubt that Verlander will throw another no-hitter, and probably several more?

The Tigers drafted Verlander number two overall in 2004. He was their prize for their awful 2003 season. The team almost didn't sign him. A contract dispute left the two sides far apart as they approached the deadline. Luckily, his dad stepped in and helped to work out a deal. When asked, at the time, what other pitcher Verlander reminds him of, Dave Dombrowski said Nolan Ryan. I've got news for you, he's better than him, too. Sure, both guys could hit triple digits on the radar gun and throw no-hitters, but it's Verlander who racks up the wins and keeps runs off the board. Ryan is the all-time leader in walks. Out of his 27 seasons in the majors, Ryan won 20 games just twice. Ryan pitched forever, and so will Verlander. Verlander, like many other hard-throwers before him, will last a long time. He keeps himself in great shape. He's also driven. When he signed his five-year, $80 million contract with the Tigers (underpaid, by the way), he was asked about his career goals. He said he wants to go into the Hall of Fame.

With the way baseball is today, it's tough to say if a player will stay with one team his whole career. I think Dombrowski and Ilitch realize what they have with Verlander. This type of pitcher doesn't just come and go. He's a once-in-a-generation, maybe lifetime, talent.

Ballet drama moves into the courtroom

Famed ballet The Red Detachment of Women is again in the limelight, but this time for a courtroom drama and story that stretches across generations.

Last November, actress Liang Danni filed a complaint in Beijing's Xicheng District Court against the National Ballet of China on behalf of her 87-year-old father, claiming 550,000 yuan ($86,968) in compensation and demanding a public apology.

The court began hearing the case in mid-April, learning that like the ballet itself, the copyright dispute carries the imprint of earlier times in China.

Based on a film of the same name written by the elder Liang, the ballet became a popular "model" performance during the "cultural revolution" (1966-76).

It tells the story of a country girl who is abused by an evil landlord and escapes, then joins the Red Army and becomes a heroine.

Military uniforms, dancing, music and powerful marching songs combine with tender, soft moments in the ballet now considered a classic from the 1960s.

Liang was a soldier who joined the army in 1945 at the age of 19.It is the best time to be discount women canada goose coats. He was demobilized in Guangdong and prepared to move to China's extreme northeast, but first returned to the island of Hainan where he had fought.

"It was the only way to see my old buddies," he told New Express Daily during an interview last year.

The Hainan trip turned out to be an inspiring journey. While there, Liang read historical records about a local women's army force founded in 1931 that won several battles.

He was so interested in their story that he traveled through deep forests on the tropical island for three months to call on survivors still living there. He wrote a movie script based on the tale in 1960.

The film was made and broadcast before National Day in 1961. It shot to fame and central government leaders commissioned a ballet adaptation in 1964.

"Liang was quite pleased to learn that The Red Detachment of Women was going to be adapted to a ballet," Li Chengxiang, then the head of the ballet troupe, recalled in his 2003 book. "He even offered script outlines for our reference."

The ballet too became well known across the country and was performed for US President Richard Nixon on his visit to China in 1972.

Yet few Chinese people then had any awareness of copyrights and the country had no related laws.

At the time Liang and the troupe never discussed copyright authorization.

After China's first copyright law came into effect in 1991, the writer and ballet troupe began negotiations on royalties.

In a letter to Liang in 1993, Li proposed a royalty payment of 3,000 yuan for a 10-year authorization.

They eventually signed an agreement that year for a payment of 5,000 yuan, but it had no specific 10-year clause.

Liang's son-in-law Feng Yuanzheng, who is also an actor, explained at a recent press conference that the copyright law at that time stipulated the longest period for authorized use was 10 years. The correspondence also discussed re-negotiation after rights expired in 10 years, he added.

5 charged in Tinley Park mob attack

Five men were in court Monday after a sudden and violent attack in a south suburban restaurant on a group of people with an alleged connections to a white supremacist group.

Ten people were injured at the Ashford House Restaurant in Tinley Park Saturday after 15 to 18 young people, wearing hooded black jackets and wielding bats and hammers, burst inside and attacked another group of 12 to 15 people who were meeting there, officials said.

According to the town's mayor, the brawl appears to have been started by a group of protestors who wanted to attack a gathering of alleged white supremacists.

Prosecutors say 10 people were injured in the melee. The victims, according to attorneys, were members of the Illinois European Heritage Association -- a group with ties to white supremicist websites.

Bail was set at $250,000 for Jason Sutherlin, 33, of Gosport, Indiana. Bail was set at $200,000 for Cody Sutherlin, 23, and $175,000 for Dylan Sutherlin, 20, both of Bloomington, Indiana. They face charges of aggravated battery, criminal damage to property and mob action. They are due in court June 12.

Two men in the targeted group were also arrested on outstanding warrants.

Steven Speers of Grand Forks, North Dakota was wanted in Dallas County, Texas, for possession of child pornography, and Francis Gilroy of West Palm Beach, Fla., is charged with unlawful possession of weapons by a felon.

Simple rules for staying sane in Seattle

1. Don't move here in the summer.

Year after year folks move here at the end of the school year. In July and August, their eyes twinkle, their skin tans, they wonder what all that rain stuff is about. By year's end,Buying a coats outlet from seller in another country. they are on the verge of breaking, transformed into vitamin D-deficient SADD-sacks water boarded by winter. Sadistically, you take pleasure in informing them that the rain will stop — next June. To avoid such agony, or the buyer's remorse that comes with the realization that the blue-skies of summer are suicide skies come February, newcomers should arrive no earlier than fall. Take the hit of dark, wet days up front, then enjoy summer's sweet mid-year lift.

2. Avoid your neighbors.

The Seattle Freeze is our famous social disease. Inoculate yourself. Don't try to make friends, better to embrace the solitude, the peace, the occasional remote wave to the unfamiliar figure next door as you both place your recycling curbside. You didn't move here for people, did you? Most everyone else moved here to get away from them. Socially, Seattleites will mostly disappoint. They're just not that into you. If you must reach out, use Skype or Facebook. That way, people come with an off-switch.

3. You can't be too utopian.

In Seattle, big ideas never die. Monorail? They're still working on it. A new waterfront? Underway. Greener than green? Oh, yeah. World class city? You betcha. Pick the candidate with the biggest ideals, the most inflated sense of mission and purpose: they usually win. We will change the world one city council resolution at a time. We prefer to hide our pragmatism behind the vanity of noble ambitions. That '62 world's fair? We leveraged our way onto the world map by selling a fantastic future, but we also sold plenty of cars, jets, and tourist trinkets. Utopia, it turns out, is good business.

4. Cultivate a superior attitude.

We're a smart city. We're home to the biggest charity in the world. We read more books. We're sustainable, serious, and hip. Portland? Stuck in the '90s. Vancouver? Hah,Every people wants to buy Cheap Arc'Teryx Outlet Sale but with best quality. they're stuck in Canada. Tacoma? We don't even make jokes about them anymore. Bellevue? Where's that? Seattle is too busy, too full of big ideas to care about anyone else. Having your nose in the air is a good way to forget that the basics are so screwed up. Seattle's public schools? Ick. Our police department? Scary. The streets? They're better in Kabul. But all of these are mere details too petty for superior minds which are set on bigger things. Like curing malaria or going global with artisanal chocolate.

5. Forget the weather report.

Cloudy. Windy. Rainy. What else do you need to know? Ignore the weather reports. Read or listen to Cliff Mass for the why, not the what. Cliff can help you understand your micro-climate, but no one can tell you with certainty what will fall from the sky and when. If you seek predictability, move to Palm Springs. If you seek a fine meteorological forensic analysis of what the hell just ruined your ill-advised backyard barbecue, you can find the answers.

6. Don't buy summer or winter clothes.

Another tip: Go for the year-round Nordstrom suit, the all-season North Face jacket, the hoodie that looks soggy wet or dry, good boots. You don't need stuff you'll wear only two days per year, like wool overcoats or sunglasses. Dress in layers. When it's 65 degrees, you can strip down. Road trip? You can't take too many coats, sweaters or blankets. Every outing should be like you're loading the car for the Apocalypse.

7. Don't think about the Big One.

Speaking of the Apocalypse, Seattle is built at the foot of a volcano in a fault zone surrounded by water. Eruption, quake, tsunami, we could get any or even all at once. Someday, Mother Nature will gob-smack us big time. It could be tomorrow, it could be 500 years from now. It's best to be in denial, so forget I said anything about Seattle being one of the most dangerous places to live in America, a modern Pompeii-in-waiting.

8. Peek through the Cascade Curtain.

The great, under-utilized sanity-izer is to flee the wetside for the dryside of the mountains sometimes. The other half of the state has things we don't have: sunshine, dust devils, big sky, stars, vineyards, Republicans. Hop over the mountains, and you'll find Montana in Cle Elum, wine country in Yakima or Walla Walla, rattlesnakes, magpies, cowboys. In the winter, there's snow and ice. You need to dry out your moss once in a while.

Man survives 180-foot plunge over Niagara Falls

A man survived a plunge of at least 180 feet over Niagara Falls in an apparent suicide attempt Monday - only the third person known to have lived after going over the falls without a safety device.

Orescanin said the man was conscious and talking at first but got quiet. He appeared to have chest injuries, including broken ribs and a collapsed lung, Orescanin said.

The man was airlifted to Hamilton General Hospital with what police initially said were life-threatening injuries. Hospital spokeswoman Agnes Bongers said later that the man was critically injured but was expected to survive.

Horseshoe Falls, on the Canadian side of the river, is the tallest of the three main falls, higher than the American Falls and Bridal Veil Falls.

The man, believed to be in his 30s or 40s, was rescued about two hours later after fire department rescuers rappelled down the steep and rocky gorge and pulled him in a basket back up the cliff.

"It was very difficult. Between the shale and the boulders, and everything is wet and slick. It's slimy," Orescanin said.

About seven rescuers struggled to carry the basket up to a point where it could be lifted with ropes suspended from an aerial truck.

"We had to basically hand carry him back up, a foot at a time, up the rope," the chief said.

The rescue came weeks before daredevil Nik Wallenda plans to walk over Niagara Falls on a tightrope after convincing United States and Canadian officials to grant an exception to laws prohibiting stunting.

Although several daredevils have survived trips over the falls in barrels or other contraptions, beginning with Annie Edison Taylor in 1901, few have survived unprotected. In 1960, 7-year-old Roger Woodward was swept over the falls wearing a life jacket and survived.
