Thursday, Mickelson shot an even-par 72 on the Tournament Course at the
Redstone Golf Club. A winner here in 2011, the four-time major champion
got his round off to a 4-under-par start before finding the water and
making double-bogey on the dogleg left par-4 fifth hole, his 14th of the
day. After that he made two bogeys coming in for a 3-over 39 for his
inward nine holes.
"It was a disappointing finish," Mickelson said. "I kind of lost it there in the end, but the good thing for me is I know what I want to do. I know what I want to do in the golf swing and I hit some good shots earlier in the round.
"I feel really good with the putter, and I believe that as the tournament goes on, I'll be better."
The 11th-ranked player in the world, Mickelson is still a very formidable presence in the game. His win at Phoenix marked his 10th consecutive year with at least one win on tour.
