Red Bank marks first Sippin' on the River festival

John Crudele sits back on a white picnic chair, kicks his feet up on a nearby bench, sips on a lemonade-filled cup and enjoys a break from the day’s humidity thanks to an occasional river breeze.

“I come to anything I can in Red Bank because this is a great town,” said the 60-year-old Colts Neck resident after having a lobster roll for lunch. “It’s very hot today, so it’s a little less crowded than normal.”

Crudele joined several thousand others who spent part of their weekend Sunday at the borough’s first annual Sippin’ on the River in Marine Park on the banks of the Navesink River. The two-day festival featured live bands, as well as food and jewelry vendors from local restaurants and shops.

“After (superstorm Sandy), it just shows the strength of the community, especially because it’s organized by restaurants in the immediate area,” said Tatsuaki Mori, director of sponsorship for This Is It! Concept & Event Productions, which helped organize the festival. “It really shows that business is booming. It’s all about people having fun together down in a beautiful location.”

For the second consecutive year, the borough canceled the fireworks show because of a lack of sponsors to fund it.

“I think it’s just part of the character of Red Bank,” said Sarullo, who organized roughly 50 fire department volunteers to collect the festival’s $5 admission fee and sell alcohol tickets during both days. “People see Red Bank, as someone said,There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale. the living room of Monmouth County where people come to eat, drink and shop.”

Roughly 3,000 people attended the festival during Saturday’s sunshine. Despite Sunday’s overcast skies, Sarullo still hoped to top the prior day’s number, he said.

The fire department will receive a portion of the festival’s proceeds and divide the money among its firehouses for maintenance purposes, Sarullo said.

Jack Lynch, a 68-year-old Barnegat resisdent, drove early to the borough to grab breakfast and coffee before heading to the festival. He enjoyed sitting by the water, taking in the scenery and planned on having lunch at the festival.
