Columbus Academy graduate has become one of the best women triathletes in the world

After an arduous hour in the water, Meredith Kessler has swum the equivalent of the Olentangy River from Lane Avenue to Goodale Boulevard. She still has at least eight taxing hours of biking and running left in her day, but she can't think about that.

"If you think (about what's left), you're done. ‘Keep calm and carry on' has always been my theme," Kessler said. "I always stay in the moment and in the mile."

There have been a lot of miles in Kessler's career. For the past three years,LIVESTRONG Cycling continues to support Riis despite Hamilton's doping claims . the 1996 Columbus Academy graduate has been a professional Ironman triathlete. The grueling competitions consist of a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride and a 26.2-mile run.

"You are at threshold power for nine hours. You get really comfortable being uncomfortable," she said. "After an Ironman, you're like a drunk person."

Kessler swam, ran track and played field hockey and lacrosse for Academy, where she is in the school hall of fame. After playing field hockey at Syracuse, she spent her college graduation money on a bike and entered an Ironman two weeks later.

After nine years as an amateur, Kessler became a professional in 2009. She is now the No.1 -ranked woman in the United States and No.5 in the world.

"Meredith had to do this trial and error, with a lot of error," said her husband, Aaron Kessler. "She toiled a lot of years trying to figure it out."

Over those 12 years, she has competed in 45 Ironmans. This year,Forme Coaching race analysis: USA Pro Garmin Cycling Challenge . the 34-year-old has competed in four Ironmans and three half Ironmans, winning five.

Her personal-best time for a full Ironman is nine hours, a vast improvement over her first race, in which the bike portion alone took Kessler more than eight.

Because of the exhausting nature of the competition, it is difficult to succeed at a young age.

"I know girls who are competing at a high level in their 40s," Kessler said. "It's not like another sport where they peak from 16 to 25. We peak at 29 to 37."

Although late bloomers are common, Kessler had some trepidation in turning professional at 31. She continued to work 60 hours a week in finance in San Francisco during her first pro year, but left that paycheck behind a year later.

"It's the best risk I've ever taken," she said. "Try telling your Midwest parents ‘I'm going to go be a professional triathlete,' (but) I make more money than I did in the real world."

Kessler, who still lives in San Francisco, earns money through quarterly checks from 19 sponsors, prize money and sponsor bonuses for top-three finishes and fees for coaching athletes.

Because she hasn't missed the podium (top three) yet this year, she expects to make about $50,000 per race over 10 events in 2012.

This year's success has been redemption for missteps made in 2011, Kessler said. Last year, she did not finish races at St. George, Utah, or Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. She won both events this year.

Getting to that point took dedication to a set plan, said Kessler's coach, Matt Dixon.

"She had the courage and the patience to set out a long-term road map," he said. "She had the wisdom to follow and really execute on that."

Managing the money and business relationships that have come with success was part of the plan, and those aspects could constitute a full-time job. That's where her husband comes in.

"I consider (myself) the CEO of Meredith Kessler incorporated,The rates may moncler jackets for sale for kids sale price tag Armstrong many 7 connected with his Expedition p Italy blog titles." Aaron said. "Going pro wouldn't mean that much if she couldn't get away from those duties."

Aaron, who played baseball at Academy, where the two met, allows his wife to focus on races. As her career continues, those races will get shorter. Her body is built for the "quick and dirty" 70.3-mile half Ironmans, she said.

Kessler will next compete in one of those in Las Vegas on Sunday. Just over a month later, she will compete with the top 30 women in the world at the Kona World Championships in Hawaii.

No matter how those races unfold, Kessler will keep calm and carry on.Hawkins full of praise for sexy corset .
