The Topshop girl grows up!

The Topshop girl grows up! Unique show sees groomed and glossy models rock the runway in sheer dresses and plenty of checks

This was the day the Topshop girl became a woman. At the Unique show groomed and glossy haired models strode confidently down a futuristic catwalk in elegant and wearable modern tailoring, pencil skirts, billowing oversized tunics, asymmetric hem skirts, slim one shoulder dresses, and up-to-the-minute sports luxe looks with sweatshirts and sequins.

These self assured ladies wore towering nude or white spike heel shoes with transparent panels.

Under the expert hand of new Creative Director Kate Phelan, gone was the weird and wonderful suited only to gawky teenagers, to be replaced by the wardrobe of a self-assured woman.

LEFT: Checks ran through collection as a strong theme, while RIGHT, pop of yellow brightened up the monochrome

First up was a stunning monochrome selection of black and white mixed with giant checks which saw oversize chequered coat teamed with slim trousers and loose shirt.

As seen on catwalks around LFW, the mix of sheer and opaque with tunic dresses with checked or plain panels, relaxed shirt and trousers in yet more check, and a perfect cream trouser suit.

A pop of colour was introduced with sunshine yellow on a long, loose maxi-length shirt and matching trousers.

Bold white flowers on black were used for trouser suits and oversized tops gave a new take on florals, while black and stripes were also reinvented in contrasting panels in an fresh take on shift dresses, and all in a wearable, muted colour palette.

Covered up: Sheer panelled dresses and bra tops were made more demure with the long lines of oversized jackets or sophisticated coats

Assured: Velvet appliqué shapes on a sheer dress - set to be a big trend for S/S13

FROW; Pixie Geldof sat with Poppy Delevigne on the front row at Unique

Good times: A clearly delighted Pixie Geldof enjoyed the show - Topshop's biggest ever

In a very demure show of flesh loose navy tailored jackets and coats and covered pencil skirts teamed with cropped and bra style tops, or two-level slim skirts.

Maxi tunic shirts would make perfect holiday wardrobe staples.

Continuing the theme of mixing textures boxy pale nude sweatshirt shapes topped matte silver sequin skirts and the silver sequins appeared as one shoulder tops with black or nude little two level skirts, as tunic dresses with sheer band hems and as modesty-saving panels on sheer tunic tops.

To finish, this assured collection, another big next summer trend of black sheer dress, this time tunic style with velvet appliqué shapes.

So is the Topshop shopper ready to grow up? My guess is this will sit happily alongside the younger collections,Leipheimer set to defend USA Pro RadioShack Cycling Challenge title. and maybe entice another type of customer through the doors.
