Small Tokyo fashion houses offer simple, affordable elegance for grown-ups

Tokyo fashion is more than just haute couture from upscale Ginza boutiques or the latest teenage trends seen on the streets of Harajuku and Shibuya.

Tokyo is also seeing a rise in home-grown fashion brands that offer affordable, elegant looks for adult women. These are well-made clothes that can serve as business attire, yet also maintain a simple, feminine elegance to complement the female silhouette. These clothes are made from quality material and solid craftsmanship, yet are not too expensive.

A long-held fashion industry maxim says that mature women with deep pockets wear overseas designer brands. But these budding Tokyo designers could make that concept a thing of the past. Here is a lineup of classy standards for grown-ups for the forthcoming fall-winter season.

“Lep Luss” is a fashion line introduced by designers Seiji Igeta, 34, and Yoshiko Kato, 33. The brand features minimal, basic designs that are almost devoid of any decoration. Yasushi Nakano is the 33-year-old designer behind “Philore,” a brand that specializes in knits.
