Lighthouse to show off new stripes during tour

When lighthouse enthusiasts file off the boat onto the island that is home to the Hillsboro Lighthouse, veterans of the quarterly tour will be surprised to see much that is new.

A fresh coat of paint brightens the exterior of the black-and-white lighthouse,Search for coats outlet in Jewellery for Lucknow. thanks to a Coast Guard-approved painter.

A new bronze statue of the Barefoot Mailman stands as a reminder of the area's not-to-distant past.

And a terrace of more than 80 commemorative bricks has been installed at the base of the flagpole. The Centennial Brick Patio was created to mark the centennial birthday of this designated historic site, as well as pay homage to those who helped fund it.

The first of those bricks sold in 2006, and the patio went in this past September.

No one expected it to take that long.

"We had to go through 86 different departments to get permits," said Hib Casselberry, now 89, and past president of the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society. "We had six different Coast Guard levels to go through; Washington, D.C.; Tallahassee; Broward County and the Army Corps of Engineers. I started it as president — then passed the baton to [new President] Art McKennia."

Also new is a display of archaeological items found at the site — including fossilized bones from the dugong, or prehistoric manatee. "They were required to have an archaeologist on site when they were digging the ground for the brick patio," explained Jennifer Burns, media volunteer.

Burns also is new to the Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society's quarterly tour.

"I am a lighthouse buff from up north, and when Art McKennia asked me to take over the press release duties from Hib … I agreed to do the newsletter because I have a degree in design," she said. The hunter in the bow does the german militaria while the hunter in the stern controls the boat.

The tour is being offered Saturday. Visitors should park in the Pompano Beach City Parking lot across from the Sands Harbor Hotel & Marina, 125 N. Riverside Drive, in Pompano Beach. The Hillsboro Lighthouse tour table will be at the dock beginning at 8:45 a.m.

Boats will travel between the marina and the lighthouse from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Rides are free to Hillsboro Lighthouse Preservation Society members and $15 per person for anyone not in military uniform.

Veterans will also be recognized on Saturday as part of Armed Forces Day, with those in uniform receiving a free boat ride.

"Armed Forces Day is a nationally recognized day set aside by Congress to recognize all branches of the military," Burns said. "It just happens to be on [Saturday]."

Visitors must have flat shoes with rubber soles and closed toes. No sandals, flip-flops or shoes with heels are allowed.
