Boaters still not getting the message about life-jackets, police say in wake of Wabamun accident

RCMP continued to search the frigid waters of Wabamun Lake Sunday,Christian Louboutin Shoes looking for the body of a man who went missing when his tube flipped the day before.

Police say a 29-year-old Edmonton man was not wearing a life-jacket when he hit the water. His two friends riding on the tube with him were wearing jackets and were later pulled from the lake, suffering from hypothermia.

On Sunday afternoon, Parkland Search and Rescue brought out an inflatable boat, scouring the lakeside in case the body had become tangled in the weeds along the shore. Much of the search was concentrated around the docks of Wabamun, but police were also scanning the east and west sides of Point Alison.cheap canada goose The recovery effort will continue until Monday, when the police will reassess the situation, said Sgt. Ian Gillan of Stony Plain RCMP.

Despite the ongoing search, the lake was dotted with boaters eager to get out on the water on a sunny spring day. They said the accident drove home the importance of boater safety.

Tamara Wiesner was sitting in her boat, waiting for the motor to start so she could go fishing. "I usually wear a life-jacket, just in case.canada goose jackets You just never know," she said. "I have a five-year-old son — I don't want to die."

Roy Wildeman, who has been boating for about 20 years, also said he would never consider taking anyone out onto the lake without a life-jacket, especially if they were going tubing.

"People have tried with me, saying they're good swimmers," Wildeman said, as he prepared to release his speedboat from its moorings. "But great swimmer or not, without a life-jacket, it doesn't matter ... you could bang your head. All my kids know, it's just common sense."

Wildeman's neighbour, 11-year-old Austin Tourangeau, said he always wears a life-jacket, but he'll be even more careful after Saturday's accident. The accident at Wabamun Lake was the third boating death in just over a week. On May 18, two Canmore men didn't return from a fishing trip on Coal Lake, about 70 kilometres southeast of Edmonton. Neither man was wearing a life-jacket and police have temporarily suspended their search.german ww2 uniforms

Police say boaters are not getting the message that life-jackets save lives.

"Especially when you're engaged in the high speed sports like wakeboarding or tire tubing," said Gillan. "You can hit yourself with a pretty good impact, knock yourself unconscious, so you don't have an opportunity to put it on after the fact."

Gillan said since it's still early in the season, the water is extremely cold, and shorts and T-shirts aren't always enough to ward off the chill if boaters fall into a lake. Instead, he

recommends people wear wet suits or similar gear.

"It's been repeated time after time, fjallraven expedition" he said. "(People don't wear life-jackets for) the same reason that they speed on Highway 63. It's just a lack of respect for themselves and other people."
