Man accused of stealing expensive winter coats

A 25-year-old man accused of stealing high-end winter coats from retailers in New Hampshire and Massachusetts was arrested outside a Route 28 sporting goods store in Salem on Tuesday with a dozen North Face jackets tucked under his arm, police said.

Adam Maksou of Methuen, Mass., is being held at the county jail on a felony theft charge after being arrested by Salem police as he was leaving the Sports Authority store on Tuesday afternoon.

Police made the arrest at 1:27 p.m., just two hours after detectives visited the store to obtain surveillance photos to help their investigation of the earlier thefts.

Maksou is expected to face more charges in Salem and possibly in Massachusetts, Deputy police Chief Shawn Patten said.

Maksou is believed to have stolen jackets out of the Sports Authority store twice in December and once in early January.

North Reading, Mass., police are also interested in speaking with Maksou, police said.

Patten said Maksou would use the same tactics to make a quick exit after stealing from the store.

Maksou would park in the fire lane in front of the store entrance and hide some or all of his license plate of his Ford Explorer with duct tape,Buying a canada goose parka from seller in another country. Patten said.

"He would leave his car running, and leave his truck door open a little bit so he could jump in and take off," Patten said.

The jackets recovered in Tuesday's theft are valued at $2,056, police said.
