London Fashion Week wraps up 5-day run

What's new for fashion in the coming winter? Consider glamorous animal prints, a touch of punk, polished tailoring, furry collars and lashings of shiny PVC. 

London Fashion Week on Tuesday wrapped up a whirlwind of runway previews that offered a huge variety of looks from dozens of designers, but one thing seemed clear: This season, many of the styles were more wearable by women who aren't necessarily models. 

That's not to say the looks were boring or conventional. Glossy rubberized material — think translucent raincoats — was everywhere, as were boxy, roomy jacket shapes. There were punk-inspired biker zips and a black and red theme at Preen, but clean and minimalist tailoring kept the outfits sophisticated. 

Erdem offered dark dresses brightened up with neon florals, while Christopher Kane, recently acquired by luxury conglomerate PPR, showcased a whole range of creative looks from camouflage-printed kilts to dark velvet dresses to feather trims. 

Roksanda Ilincic brought out a series of feminine dresses and separates in peachy pinks, but clashed them with fluorescent green and emerald accents, ghostly makeup and statement striped lace-up boots in bright metallic hues.

Earlier, the headline acts of the week lived up to high expectations.

Officials have made a point of nurturing that creative energy, though increasingly designers based in the capital are encouraged to take a more business-savvy approach to fashion — the leading creative industry in Britain, worth 21 billion pounds (US$33 billion) to the U.K. economy. 

"Before it was more like an art show, but now — now the creativity is still there, though with collections that are saleable, that generate a profitable business," said British Fashion Council chief executive Caroline Rush.

As the runways get dismantled in London, models, editors and bloggers are jetting off to more womenswear shows in Milan, which begins its fashion week Wednesday, followed by Paris next week.

Steampunk: Clockwork Couture by Donna Ricci

Steampunk is a trend that has been taking the world by storm. Leading the trend with her intricate designs is Donna Ricci. Her pieces have already started to appear on popular television shows such as America's Next Top Model, and show no signs of slowing. Ricci's journey towards Clockwork Couture began in 2008 when she discovered this trend of intermingling Victorian fashion with modern technology. Her website was launched in December, making it the first Steampunk retailer. This was followed by the first bricks and mortar store in 2009. 

What is your name, where are you from and how old are you?

I am a student of life, of inspirational people around me and of nature itself. All else is completely incidental. 

Which of your current designs is your favourite? 
The one I find most versatile? The adventurer's ensemble. The soft corduroy drapes across the hips allows you to wear trousers or skirts underneath, and the jacket fits across like a well-tailored uniform. 

Are the designs all your own or are there multiple designers? 
We pull from a great many places to put together one incredible shop of wonder. I do design, but not everything here is mine. We collaborate with local artisans, far-away tinkerers and stay-at-home crafters. 

How would you describe the style of your own home? Does it reflect in your products? 

My home is a bohemian den of comfort and colour. I spend more time at work, which is a little Steampunk workshop. 

Are any of your pieces modified from vintage items? 
We are in the process of creating patterns from some vintage pieces and reworking them for modern fashionistas, but all current items are just dreams turned into tangible items. 

Your hats are especially interesting, gorgeous and elaborate. What sort of event would you hope your customers would wear these to, and what did you have in mind when you designed/made them? 

Women need to stop thinking of hats as costume accessories, and start wearing them to the market, the theatre and out for walks again.Stay up to date on the latest team rider and supraskateshoes releases. It should not just sit atop the head, but crown your ensemble and be part of your person. 

What is your favourite sort of thing to design? Why? 

Dresses and skirts. I love legs. 
What is your favourite era for design and why? 

My favourite silhouettes are 1860-1890s dresses. Exaggerated feminism without any excessive billowing. 

How would you describe your personality, and is this reflected in your work? 
Eternal optimist with a desire to leave the planet better than when I entered it. Because it's a core foundation of my being, and not simply a branding decision, it is a law that molds each decision made. What has been the highlight of your career so far? 
Being asked to work with some of my favourite actors on their personal projects. It's an honour, a privilege and great geek-out joy all in one. I will forever be in awe and gratitude to Miss Felicia Day and Krystyn Ingram for including me in “The Guild” work.

"This was once an awful place ... nothing but a bunch of contaminated soil and about 1,200 miserable-looking deer that had eaten just about every bit of grass there was," a staff member told the Post in 2006.

The billionaire appointed a staff and set to work moulding it into a model of environmentally friendly development. Gas engines and pesticides were virtually banned from the property (even the Hummer was on its way out), invasive species were ripped out and one-fifth of the island was permanently shielded from development by land covenants. To address the herds of emaciated deer, Mr. McCaw eschewed an islandwide cull in favour of birth-control shots.
