What's it like to be a firefighter?

Smoke was slowly billowing out of a storage shed in Fireman's Park as I knelt just outside of the door.

I had been waiting for this moment all day. My heart pounded and sweat dripped in my face. I hoped my deodorant would hold up. The heavy gear weighed me down so much that it felt like someone was standing on my shoulders.

That wasn't the first time I put on a full firefighter suit July 23. When I was first handed a pair of pants by Capt. Matt Karpinski of emergency medical services at the Germantown Fire Department earlier in the day, my only hope was to get them over my butt. No female wants to ask a man for a bigger pair of pants.

With a little shimmying, I was able to Velcro them shut. I was fitted with every piece of firefighter gear that afternoon. I had no idea there was so much to it.

Here's how it went: One leg into the pants and a boot, then the other. Put your coat on. Latch every hook. Velcro your jacket shut. Put a face mask around your neck and hang it like an oversized necklace. Put a black fire hood over your head, leaving it sit on your neck. Next, swing the air pack onto your back, latch it tightly around your torso. Shove and fasten a helmet onto your head. Pull the hood over your helmet. Put on the air mask. Make sure it suctions to your face. Lastly, put on gloves. Once it's all in place, turn the air tank on and connect the tube from the tank to the mask.

And, do it all in two minutes. If you don't, you fail and you can't be a firefighter. Putting gear on in two minutes is a requirement.welcome to replica shoes web, best service and low prices.Shop bottega bag online and get complimentary shipping today.‎ I failed — by about 13 minutes.
Darth Vader issues?

The face mask didn't sit well with me. Something about wearing a machine to help breathe made me uneasy. Trust issues? Perhaps. Whatever it was it made me twitchy.

Karpinski had me try the gear on in preparation for the training exercise that night, which tested me in more ways than one. The exercise was simple enough. You go up stairs, over a picnic table and through a wooden tunnel in full firefighter gear and make it through the obstacles strategically placed to slow you down. You do this blinded by smoke, requiring you to crawl on your hands and knees.

The point of the exercise was to practice falling through a weak floor and getting tangled by debris. This can happen anytime firefighters have to go inside a burning building and they have to be prepared. The exercise was meant to simulate that. The firefighters have training every Tuesday so they are ready for any scenario. There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale.

The second time I put the gear on for training,Up to 40% Off bottega purses, shop farfetch today!‎ it took 10 minutes,The latest trends and best prices on Michael Kors Bags 2013. and Karpinski still had to help me. It had to be done correctly because this time I was going to enter a smoky building.

Even though I knew what to expect because I helped set up the training exercise, I was nervous.

As I slowly crawled into the building, the smoke was so thick I could barely see my hand in front of my face. The only thing that mattered was crawling blindly one knee at a time, up each stair and across the room.
Dreading the fall

As I slowly crept forward, I knew what was coming. I was going to fall and I didn't have a choice. I had to crawl forward.

I felt the floor bend beneath. I paused. Karpinski yelled to keep moving. There was a loud snap as my weight broke the plywood and I tumbled onto the padded floor. I rolled to my right. Karpinski landed on the floor after me. I twisted back to the crawl position and felt for a wall. The only way out was through a tunnel. I thought maybe I would be small enough to continue to crawl on my knees. It was impossible and I had to army crawl on my stomach. I've never army-crawled before in my life, much less through a small tunnel.

Halfway through the smoke-filled tunnel, irrational panic began to set in. "Is that sweat in my eye? What if the air tank breaks? Will they pull me out of the tunnel in time? My neck hurts, is this helmet going to break my neck? Am I going to die in here?"

I stopped mid-tunnel and thought back to what some of the firefighters told me earlier in the day, when I was not so subtly hiding my nerves about the training exercise.

"If you feel yourself beginning to panic, stop and take a deep breath. Just control your breathing." I did just that and started moving again.

Then, I hit the wires. They were lined tightly in the way. I tried to shimmy under them. Unless I could transfigure into a mouse, it was impossible.

In the past when I have found myself in unsettling situations, my instincts were not to fight or to flee. Rather, my instinct was to just sit. I go blank. For a few seconds in that tunnel, I just laid there and had no plans to move. Karpinski snapped me out of it, handing me a pair of wire cutters, shouting at me to use them. Wire cutters never really had much significance to me before last week. To a firefighter, wire cutters can save his or her life.

At last I was free. Free from the wire, free from the tunnel, free from the smoke and back outside. I wanted nothing more than to rip my face mask off, pound my chest and yell like a wild beast. I did none of this as everything at the fire department has a routine and stringent protocol, including taking off your gear.

I was actually grateful for the protocol because there were about 20 firefighters sitting on a hill watching me and waiting for their turn to go into the building. Seeing as I had a hard time just putting my gloves on, I didn't want to embarrass myself further. For me, the exercise was physically demanding, terrifying and well out of my comfort zone. For the firefighters, it can be a normal day. I emerged from that building with a great sense of respect.

The left is necessary again

I found myself last week searching out my left shoes.

Sometime during the previous 2 1/2 months, they had been swooped up and stored away.replica louis vuitton handbags

They had, after all, become unnecessary household clutter — useless obstacles blocking an otherwise clear pathway to the door. It had made sense to retire them in the same fashion as the winter hats, mittens and boots.

My left shoes hadn’t crossed my mind for weeks. But, at that moment, I needed one.

At least my hunt proved short and satisfying.

Short, since I found them all in one left-shoe pile in one lonely left-shoe corner — like a coordinated team of misfit toys exiled to their forgotten island.

And satisfying, because it signaled progress.
No more boot

I had been allowed to discard my scooter — my walkabout — more than two weeks earlier and place my full weight on the left foot, my once ruptured Achilles tendon finally ready to return to its original purpose.

But the ankle hadn’t quite been ready to go it alone, still requiring the support of the plastic, fabric and Velcro walking boot that had encased my calf and foot most of the time since the day after my softball injury.

Now, as I prepared to head out for my doctor’s office Wednesday, I was expecting to leave the appointment under my own flesh, bone and tendon power.

No more storm trooper boots, scooters or crutches required.Shop cheap christian louboutin shoes, pumps, wedding shoes, sandals with low price in our discount christian louboutin sandals Store online.

My recovery I knew was still far from over, although the healing had progressed as scheduled so far.

Six weeks off my foot. At least two in the boot. And physical therapy — three times a week for a month — ahead. And it could take up to a year to feel 100 percent, the doctor said.

But I already had experienced the freeing feeling of a scooter-free life, the joy of tackling curbs and stairs instead of constantly seeking out elevators and the relief of sliding into a restaurant booth without needing extra room to elevate my foot.
New steps

At that point, I felt ready to take the next steps toward normalcy, especially taking a shower with both feet planted firmly on the floor.

It has been eye-opening at times, my temporary trip into the world of the disabled and the previously unconsidered challenges it poses.

It has been humbling at times, with so many people I know and don’t know offering their help, expressing their concern and wishing me well.

And it has brought introspection at times, especially thoughts about how fortunate I am to have the expectation of a full recovery.

More than anything, as I grabbed the proper shoe from the pile and headed for the car, I felt anxious to put my ankle to the full, weight-bearing test.welcome to michaels kors handbags sale,Free shipping‎! I couldn’t wait to give my boot the boot — and never look back.

Now if I could only find a left sock to match the right.

With NFL rookies already at training camp and veterans due to arrive this coming week, the New Orleans Saints begin the process of preparing for another Super Bowl run. Compared to the beginning of last year’s training camp, I have high hopes and expectations for the Saints this year. Head coach Sean Payton is back, Drew Brees is coming off of his second consecutive season throwing for 5,000 or more yards and new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan is here to correct last year’s defensive deficiencies.

Despite all the reasons I have to be excited, there is a bit of a mystery on the offensive line, specifically at the left tackle position. Previously, Jermon Bushrod filled that spot and performed fairly well. The Saints, however, value their guards more so than their tackles and let Bushrod test the waters of free agency.Find the latest collection of Michael Kors Wallets at hotmkbags. Katwalk Casa, which first opened in August last year

Mayor Linda Frost was on hand earlier to open two newly expanded businesses in the Apsley House shopping arcade in the High Street, which have experienced growth despite the poor economic climate.

Katwalk Casa, which first opened in August last year, has now doubled in size after taking over the next-door unit.

They now sell leather shoes, jeans and casual clothes imported from France and Italy as well as fashion accessories including handbags, purses, scarves, jewellery and belts.

Annamaria Quinn, who owns Katwalk Casa with Mary Lloyd, said: “Many of our customers had asked for a shoe shop, and when the unit next door became vacant we felt it was an opportunity not to be missed.

“Royal Wootton Bassett needs shoes – and we are very pleased to provide them.”

Visitors to the opening earlier this month made the most of a 10 per cent discount on all stock as well a enjoying a glass of sparkling wine.

Lesley Allcorn and Caroline Little took on the little cafe and eatery in the Arcade last October with a view to expanding the business.

They have now redecorated and doubled in size, and introduced a brand new menu for the occasion.

Lesley said: “We are at that point where we’re really looking forward to expanding and opening up the new business.

“We’re going to have a new deli bar, where customers can choose their sandwich fillings and watch the sandwiches being made, and we are having a new kitchen installed so customers can watch their breakfasts and lunches being made.”

They are now also offering a range of takeaway food and are providing free wi-fi and the use of computers. Customers can also hire the premises for private functions and make use of an outside catering service.

The second day of the Bisat Al-Reeh festival in Jeddah
The second day of the Bisat Al-Reeh festival in Jeddah was attended by around 2600 visitors — all sophisticated women with a taste for trendy wearables and accessories, so much so that even sellers at the event described their clientele as classy and full of vigor.

This year, some exhibitors are showcasing products that are environmentally friendly and are helping to raise awareness on green practices their merchandise.

“My products are from Bahrain. Another booth, Alnabta is a non-profit organization that aims to spread environmental awareness in Saudi society. They are offering educational curriculum to schools for grades one, two and three. Alnabta also offers other awareness programs designed especially for offices and schools by inviting them to an environmental club that stresses on the importance of protecting our planet.

“All these programs need funding and we usually collect money from selling different products. This year we have stylish and limited handbags made from recycled canvas. Seven Smart Comic Books

For many years, TV was the leaky life raft for movie stars and directors to avail themselves of when the bloated Titanic of their film careers collided with the iceberg of audience indifference. These days, it's looking more like an escape in the best sense as the film industry, high on the pricey steroids of superhero blockbusters, has grown inhospitable to everything from character actors to character-based dramas. The latest casualty of Hollywood's comic-book obsession? Comic books themselves. This week it was announced that Alan Moore and Kevin O'Neill's literate adventure series The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen — featuring the exploits of Allan Quartermain, Captain Nemo, Mina "Dracula's chewtoy" Harker, Dr. Jekyll, and the Invisible Man in a steampunk vision of Victorian London — was being developed by Fox as a put pilot. This is promising news for two reasons.Welcome to our michael kors outlet online shop! Here we sale Michael Kors Hamilton Satchel, bags, purses, wallets with very low price. Join us quickly! One, The League deserved better than the tepid Sean Connery movie that sent its star into early retirement back in 2003; when placed in the right hands, the material is rich enough to support an ongoing series. And two, Fox's move is a welcome and overdue sign that a thinkier tier of comic properties, gobbled up in the wake of Spider-Man's success, might finally fall out of the hands of uninterested, rights-hoarding film studios and into the more creative arms of television networks where they belong.

I wrote about the struggles of caped crusaders on TV back in May, arguing that there's a whole world of non-mutant-based stories out there ready for the retelling. I even made a few suggestions about some CGI-lite titles that deserved a shot, like Marvel's Damage Control as a companion for S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC and Paul Chadwick's Concrete as a heavy half-hour on HBO. Here are a few more off-the-cuff suggestions of off-the-beaten-path comics that could flourish on the small screen. Feel free to throw out a few ideas of your own in the comments. It's summer and the junior executives who aren't detoxing in Ojai could use all the free ideas they can get.

(Note: I've left off seemingly slam-dunk projects that have already foundered, like Marvel's Alias on ABC and Powers on FX.)
The Comic: Y: The Last Man (Vertigo, 2002-08)

Writer Brian K. Vaughan has had continued success in comics (his Runaways is the best original idea Marvel's had since the '60s; Saga is currently getting raves) and on TV (he's the main writer on CBS's summer hit Under the Dome), but his most popular work remains this maxi-series about a doofy young magician named Yorick who somehow survives a global plague that wipes out every other man alive. And with good reason: It's a stirring postapocalyptic adventure story not afraid to tackle tough issues of gender, responsibility, and monkey-tolerance. People have been trying to adapt Y as a movie for years (for a while it was set up with Shia LaBeouf starring and DJ Caruso directing) and, apparently, they're still at it. This is a mistake.

The Pitch: A story this epic — and thought-provoking — demands the expanded canvas of television. It'd be a perfect fit for Showtime, which, in its efforts to dethrone HBO,Shop the Michael Kors Crossbody Bags on the world's largest fashion site. has been pursuing a strongly female-fronted slate. And while the network has made a huge splash with Homeland (and a smaller ripple with Ray Donovan), it still lacks its Game of Thrones or The Walking Dead, the killer genre app that makes up in viewers and Entertainment Weekly covers what it lacks in Emmys. With the right lead and the right monkey (hey, I think Crystal is available!), Y could be a huge win for a risk-taking network and an eager, impatient fan base.

Grant Morrison's brain, even while sleeping, could power the Hadron Collider. His comic books, whether original creations like Seaguy and The Invisibles or franchise work on X-Men and Batman, are so packed with ideas it's a wonder there's any room for thought balloons. This makes an adaptation particularly tricky — unlike most comic writers, he's not auditioning for movies in his scripts, he's trying to make movies look small in comparison. But I think there's potential in this overlooked three-issue collaboration with ace artist Philip Bond. It's the story of Ali, a mild-mannered Pakistani twentysomething living in a tidy corner of the U.Latest collection of Michael Kors Hamilton.K. where he helps his father run a chain of corner stores. But all naraka breaks loose when, on the day Ali is to meet his arranged bride,Shop for Michael Kors Monogram at hotmkbags. a strange crate of Turkish delights opens a portal to a Day-Glo multiverse and all the deities and wonders of Islamic and Hindu myth come pouring out.

The Pitch: BBC America has been making waves with its smart and progressive sci-fi and fantasy offerings, from Doctor Who to Orphan Black. This would be a pricey miniseries, but one that could draw attention for its respectful portrayal of both multicultural England and a conquering race of Indian space gods.Find great deals on hotmkbags for michael kors wallet Michael Kors Hamilton Bags in "Women's Clothing, Handbags and Purses". The news this February that ANN7

The chop

Ok, so were any Screen Africa readers really surprised to hear that one of the three ministers axed by President Jacob Zuma on Tuesday 9 July, in yet another of his cabinet reshuffles,In our Michael Kors handbags outlet shop, cheap Michael Kors Bags 2013 hot sale at an affordable price. was Dina Pule? The former Minister of Communications (now replaced by Yunus Carrim),Save on Christian Louboutin Pump! All the Sales, All in One Place. was synonymous in the media for controversy related to allegations of impropriety and Christian Louboutin shoes.

At the time of the axing Pule was under investigation by the Public Protector as well as the parliamentary ethics committee. Her troubled tenure was four months short of two years. One assumes President Jacob Zuma got tired of all the negative publicity around her and her notable lack of progress in the country’s much delayed digital migration project and the hoo-haa around her questionable interference in the executive management and board of beleaguered public broadcaster SABC.

The newly appointed Minister Carrim (formerly the Deputy Minister of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs) will have to wave a Harry Potter-ish magic wand to get South Africa’s roll out to digital terrestrial television (DTT), as yet still not underway, completed by June 2015, after which analogue signals in Africa will no longer be protected by the International Communications Union. If Carrim (assuming he is still in office by that date) and the Department of Communications fail to make the June 2015 deadline, then we’d all better make sure we have satellite TV otherwise we won’t have any TV to switch on to at all. Either that or we’d better hope IPTV takes root or stock up on DVDs!

We’ll have to wait and see how the new Minister pans out. The South African Communist Party (SACP), for one, has expressed its approval with his appointment. But then that’s not really surprising considering Carrim serves on the SACP’s central committee and on its Politburo. How Carrim’s communist beliefs will affect his handling of the sectors that now fall under his purview remains to be seen.

One thing the SACP is not too delighted with, according to a statement released on 9 July, is the SABC’s recent announcement that it will launch its long-awaited 24-hour news channel on MultiChoice’s DStv pay-TV platform. The SACP believes that the service should be free-to-air and made available to all South Africans.

When I spoke to the SABC News department in August 2011 (yes, that far back) about the 24-hour news channel, they talked about DTT being the ideal platform for the channel, being free-to-air. Of course, at the time the SABC was labouring under the misguided impression, as we all were,Shop cheap christian louboutin shoes, pumps, wedding shoes, sandals with low price in our discount christian louboutin sandals Store online. that DTT was to be launched soon.

The SABC’s recent statement does say that once DTT happens, the news channel will be available on that platform, as well as DStv.

As to when the news channel will actually hit the airwaves, the SABC statement reads: ‘The news channel will be launched by the SABC’s Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Ms Lulama Mokhobo, on 1 August 2013 where more information will be communicated’.

I called SABC spokesperson Kaizer Kganyago on Monday 8 July to confirm whether 1 August 2013 would also be the on-air broadcast date. He said that the SABC was working towards that goal but could only confirm closer to the time.

Another of the SACP’s concerns about the 24-hour news channel is ‘the lack of clarity on the proposed channel and the relationship with Africa News Network 7 (ANN7) owned by, amongst others,There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale. the Gupta family. The SACP views the latest attempt as a part privatisation of public broadcasting service at best and at worst a poor attempt at a Private Public Partnership’.

The news this February that ANN7, a 24-hour news service, would launch ‘later in the year’ came as a surprise to most people, including the SABC. Also to be broadcast on DStv, ANN7 is run by Infinity Media – a joint venture between Essel Media and Oakbay Investments (the majority shareholder in The New Age newspaper). There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s first ever 24-hour news channel, e.tv’s eNCA (available on DStv) has been going strong since its launch on 1 June 2008. Late last year it became available on the Sky digital satellite platform in the UK. eNCA has proved to be a good example of a successful private commercial enterprise.

It turns out that Dr Lupton was one of Adele’s saviours

Real Life: I gave up work for a better life then I was told I had cancer

It’s been a whirlwind four years with some pretty emotional highs and lows but now life’s good for the 43-year-old.

But it’s a million miles from the way she was feeling four- and-a-half years ago. Then she didn’t think she would see her 40th birthday. “When I think of what I’ve done in the past four years it’s unbelievable,” says Adele.

Turn back the clock to when Adele was working as assistant director for the Home Office in asylum claims in Solihull and things were very different. Life was ticking along nicely.

“At the time I enjoyed my job. It was a busy place but I absolutely loved it. I loved the people and the work.”

But as the Government changed the way things were run in the department, making it more target driven, it became too stressful for Adele, from Stafford.

“I was doing 15-hour days, driving to and from work as well as my time in the office, it was too much,” she says.

So Adele gave up her job to take some time out and to start to enjoy her life again. But a few weeks later on holiday with the girls things took a dramatic turn.

“I was suffering from really bad period pains. I can remember I was in absolute agony. I took about 16 paracetamol in about two hours. But they just didn’t work.

“We were staying at the holiday home of my friend’s dad and she found one of his strong painkillers so I took one. My speech was all slurred but I was still in agony,” she recalls. “Nothing seemed to work.”

When she got home she went to her GP and was referred to a specialist who told her she should see a gynaecologist.

“I went and she was awful. She was so rude. She was horrible. I was in agony and she didn’t seem to want to help at all.”

Adele went on to have various scans and blood tests but they couldn’t pin-point the problem.

One day she was lying in bed crying from the pain. “My stomach was bloated I looked six months pregnant. I didn’t know what to do.”

She says that Tim, her partner at the time, now her husband, was so angry. “I remember him saying,There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale. ‘this has got to stop. You’ve got to sort it out’. So I did. I went back to the gynaecologist and insisted they do more tests.”

It was during this visit that Adele’s worst fears were realised. “They did another scan and the doctor said she couldn’t find my ovaries, only a mass where they should be. She said I needed to have them removed and possibly have a full hysterectomy. I was in shock I couldn’t take it in.”

It was at this point Adele decided to use private health care and this is where she met Mr Kirk Chin, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Stafford Hospital. “He was great, really great,” she smiles.

He continued with the tests until he had to break the news to Adele that she had bi-lateral ovarian cancer.

“I had given up my job to have a better life. A few weeks later I was diagnosed with cancer,” she frowns.

Not only did Adele have to take in the fact she had cancer,Shop cheap christian louboutin shoes, pumps, wedding shoes, sandals with low price in our discount christian louboutin sandals Store online. she had to deal with knowing she would never have children. “We weren’t trying to have children but we weren’t adverse to the idea either.

“I remember feeling in total shock. He told me I would have to have a hysterectomy as soon as possible. The first thing I said was, ‘I can’t, I’ve got horses’. He reasoned with me and told me I had to come back by the end of the week and if didn’t agree he would keep me in and do it there and then. I agreed.”

It was then that Adele asked the question she didn’t really want to hear the answer to. “I wanted to know, ‘am I going to die?’

“He said ‘not if I can help it’ and I believed him.”

At this point Adele hadn’t broken the news to Tim who was waiting outside. “His face just went grey when I told him,” she remembers. But she was ready to fight it.

By now Adele had got used to the care she received by going private and also the food. When Mr Chin said she had to see an oncologist she asked if this too could be done privately. Mr Chin advised her that the oncologist he would like her to see was Dr Susan Lupton.

“He said she wasn’t private but she was the best.” And she was and still is in Adele’s eyes.

She went to Stafford Hospital for her chemotherapy under the care of Dr Lupton.

“The nurses at Stafford were amazing – real angels and are now personal close friends. One day when I couldn’t have my chemo because my bloods were too low, I went into the hospital all dressed up in my best dress, hat and heels as it was Ladies Day at Ascot – I put all the TVs on and had the patients betting on the races (for biscuits no money unfortunately). They all thought I was a celebrity there to help cheer them up!”

It turns out that Dr Lupton was one of Adele’s saviours. “She was the best and she was brilliant. I couldn’t have got through it without her,” Adele says with tears in her eyes.

In fact, Adele rated her so highly that even after having surgery and six sessions of chemotherapy she refused to be seen by anyone else and waited until Dr Lupton had returned to work after maternity leave. The Michael Kors Outlet Online Store sale cheap Michael Kors Handbags with discount price and excellent quality, 30-60% off, fast shipping and no tax!

But that’s how Adele comes across, she is very strong and determined, full of fighting spirit. “Sometimes after the chemo I’d get really low and think ‘I’d rather die than go through this’.

But Adele had another saviour, her horse Leah. “Five-and-a-half-weeks after the surgery I was back on my horses. I couldn’t get off them but that didn’t matter!”

“I used to collect shoes and handbags but now I collect horses.” Adele also had a motorbike but sold that to buy ‘real horsepower’.

Now she surrounds herself and her husband with their animals. Her three horses Leah, Rocky, Rosie, three dogs, Blue and Sam, both Jack Russells, and Jake, a cocker spaniel labrador cross and her two cats Salt and Pepper.Shop the latest collection of Michael Kors 2013 from the most popular stores.

And how does she feel to keep reliving such a painful time? “If telling my story helps one person get checked out and saves that person, then at least I’ve done something to help someone.”

It’s something she feels very strongly about, making people aware of the disease, which is known as ‘the silent killer’. She appeared on Lorraine Kelly’s television show earlier this year to help promote Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. Her tireless efforts of fundraising have helped both the Eve Appeal and Cancer Research to the tune of $20,000.

It was at a charity ball she had organised where she gave a speech about dates. “I wanted to give a speech to share some important and memorable dates. One was April 7, 2009, which was the date my hair started to fall out,” Adele recalls. She started to lose her long blonde hair during her chemotherapy treatment. “I remember feeling sick. I cried for 24 hours and I was on my own because Tim was away. I didn’t leave the house.”

But being made of sterner stuff she made the decision to shave it all off as she didn’t want it falling out in clumps. “It was hard. I felt awful, but you just have to get over it,” she says matter-of-factly.

Another key date in Adele’s life is May 30, 2011 when she ran with the Olympic torch through Haughton in Staffordshire. “Apart from my wedding day, being a torchbearer was one of the best days of my life.”

She goes on to say her schoolfriend, Ann-Marie Cooper nominated her. “I couldn’t believe it. It was enough to be nominated but being chosen was amazing. I was just overwhelmed.”

And where is the torch now? “We’re going to have it put up in our new kitchen,” smiles Adele. After things had settled down and Adele was told her cancer was in remission she was busy planning her wedding. “I’d have been happy going to Stafford registry office after all that but Tim wanted something special. I didn’t want to marry in a church saying the traditional vows because I didn’t want to say the words ‘til death do us part’. I was Googling places abroad and found a wedding venue in Italy and it looked so plain, simple and rustic and I thought ‘that’s me’.”View Michael Kors Handbags Outlet 2013 Collection. So she picked out her Suzanne Neville gown from Margot Raybould in Beatties, House of Fraser, Wolverhampton. The couple flew out to Lake Iseo in Italy to get married in September 2011 and enjoyed a delayed honeymoon to Kuredu in the Maldives the following year.

Vinyl Revival hopes to be a destination

A revival of vinyl at new Lansdowne business

Some call it a comeback. Others call it an analog revolt against the digital age. In a literal take on the adage “What comes around goes around,” vinyl records have caught the attention of music lovers and collectors everywhere.

Local entrepreneur Andrea DiFabio is banking on this back-to-the-LP movement. Due to open next month in downtown Lansdowne on the site of the former Cinema 16:9 is a new old-style record shop, Vinyl Revival, promising a return a time when shopping for music was a touchy-feely experience.

“I think the interest in vinyl never went away for record collectors but a new generation of music fans is coming to appreciate the warm sound and the experience of sitting down and listening to a record. The artwork on many record covers is also another draw,” says DiFabio, 44, of Springfield.

This fashion, art and music aficionado is taking the record store experience and combining it with unusual gifts like handbags made from recycled album covers, pillows made from cast-off band/concert T-shirts, clocks and mirrors made from reused vinyl records plus original artwork and jewelry -- all with a music theme.

DiFabio is partnering with the FirstGlance Film Festival to program a variety of features, documentaries, short films and live music events to be showcased in the 40-seat theater in a First Friday screening series.

“Since the space already had a theater, I thought I’d expand the independent record store to include indie films and artwork too. With the opening of Vinyl Revival, I look forward to reaching out to the community of artistic-minded people who value alternative entertainment and unique products as much as I do,” she says. There are numerous diversified high heels at christian louboutin shoes for sale.

Like the original rock ‘n’ roll invasion, the vinyl resurgence seems to have started in England. Popular bands like the White Stripes, Primal Scream, Keane and the Arctic Monkeys have all insisted their singles be released on the 7-inch disc format. American avant-garde artist Beck released an album where consumers could choose their own album cover. The Michael Kors Outlet Online Store sale cheap Michael Kors Handbags with discount price and excellent quality, 30-60% off, fast shipping and no tax!

Millennials seem to be hooked on their parents’ music. The Classic Rock format in radio programming keeps the music of the 60s, 70s and 80s alive and relevant.

Classic Rock is hip and records are cool again. And this nostalgia extends to performance venues as well. If you’ve been to a recent Tom Petty concert you’d see that 20-somethings outnumber Boomers.

This burgeoning audience of audiophiles was rocked to sleep to the strains of Jackson Browne and Bad Company and now they’re demanding the original music in its original format and packaging.

Who can forget the anticipation of peeling off the cellophane of a new LP and listening to the grooved tracks on a Technics turntable while reading the liner notes and marveling at the album cover art work?

Some of the best album covers of all time belong to the Beatles. In 1966, the Beatles ushered in the age of album illustration psychedelia with Revolver followed by the trippy Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band and the mysterious “Is Paul Dead?” cover of Abbey Road. Other top album covers include Pink Floyd’s A Momentary Lapse of Reason,The Clash’s London Calling, Prince’s Sign of the Times and Nirvana’s Nevermind. Some would argue for the Led Zeppelin IV symbolically anonymous cover or the Rolling Stones photo collage on Exile on Main St. It’s a debate worth hearing in an iTunes world.

DiFabio remembers when a trip to the music store was a day-long adventure. “Growing up, I loved hanging out at my local record store. I hope to get people excited about music when they discover an older artist who is new to them or a new artist they never heard about.”

Vinyl Revival will be stocked with many vintage and new albums from a wide variety of genres including folk, rock, pop, R&B, indie, children’s records, soundtracks and holiday albums. On the visual side of the business, Vinyl Revival will screen features, documentaries and short films by independent filmmakers. The theater will also be available to rent for private parties and cast and crew screenings.

In this age of digital downloads and music-on-the-go, DiFabio hopes to get people to take a few hours of their time and get intimate with art and music. “My mission for opening Vinyl Revival is two-fold: to give customers an alternative to digital music,Shop the latest collection of Michael Kors 2013 from the most popular stores. the multiplex movie theaters and national retail chains by focusing more on indie and local artists.

Woman robbed by motorbike pair in Queens Road in Buckhurst Hill

A woman had her mobile phone and Rolex watch stolen when two men on a motorbike threatened her with a knife and a handgun in the street.

The 38-year-old was walking along Queens Road in Buckhurst Hill when the duo pulled up alongside her.

They then pulled out the weapons and grabbed the items and her keys.Welcome to our michael kors outlet online shop! Here we sale Buy Michael Kors, bags, purses, wallets with very low price. Join us quickly!

The woman suffered a broken finger when the pair snatched her watch.

The duo then sped off.

It happened at around 11pm on Thursday, but Essex Police has only released information about the attack today.

Investigating Officer, DC Nina Fletcher, said in a statement: "We’re looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the actual robbery, heard the woman screaming or saw a motorcycle being ridden at high speed, the wrong way up Queens Road between 11pm and midnight on Thursday night.”

A police spokesman added: "The rider and his passenger are both described as white and were wearing helmets and dark clothing, with one being taller than the other.

The Colorado River’s winter whisper in the Kawuneeche Valley was becoming a quiet spring roar last week as the stream hinted at the beginnings of the snowmelt’s pell-mell tumble off the mountains.

But not a drop of that snowmelt cascading into the Colorado River will reach the Pacific Ocean. The last time the Colorado River reached its delta at the Sea of Cortez was in 1998.

The Colorado River — the carver of the Grand Canyon and the chaotic stage for river runners in Glenwood, Westwater, Cataract and numerous other canyons — is bridled by urban growth from its headwaters at La Poudre Pass at the Larimer-Grand county border all the way to its dry delta in Mexico.

More than 35 million people rely on the Colorado River for drinking water and lawn care. More than 5.5 million acres of farmland depend on the river for irrigation. In Fort Collins, the Colorado River fills bathtubs, Horsetooth Reservoir, and bottles of Fat Tire and 90 Shilling.

As an avid fly-fisherman and Roaring Fork Valley river activist,Welcome to Michael Kors Handbags Outlet online now. Ken Neubecker knows the Colorado River well. In April, the group he works for, American Rivers, named the Colorado the group’s most endangered river of 2013.

“It’s been one of the most endangered rivers for a long time,” he said last week while watching trout jump in the muddy Colorado River as it raced, swollen with silty spring runoff, through Glenwood Springs. “It’s good to see that the entire river is getting attention now because the entire river is pretty much worked to death. It has been plumbed from top to bottom.”

All the people who rely on the river every day are projected to double to up to 76 million in the next 50 years. New industries, such as thirsty oil shale development in northwest Colorado,Discover the largest collection of gucci handbags for women. are expected to use more water from the river. Climate change is expected to make the flows in the river less and less regular and less and less certain.

“We’re putting very intensive demands on very limited resources, somehow hoping that we won’t push the river to its breaking point,” said Dave Nickum, executive director of Colorado Trout Unlimited.Welcome to buy christian louboutin shoes from our online store.

The challenge for the river’s caretakers is daunting, he said: “It’s really trying to keep it as a viable living river in the face of diversions.”

The U.S. Bureau of Reclamation announced in December that it expects flows in the Colorado River to decrease at the northern end of the Grand Canyon by about 9 percent in the next 50 years because of regular periods of drought in the river’s headwaters. That is expected to create a large gap between how much Colorado River water is needed for cities, farmers and wildlife, and how much water the river can actually provide.

When the future of the Colorado River is uncertain, the future of Northern Colorado is uncertain, too.

“If you’re here in Fort Collins, half of the water that comes out of your tap is Colorado River water,” said Reagan Waskom, director of the Colorado Water Institute at Colorado State University. “We are part of the reason that the upper part of the river gets de-watered. We have to take responsibility for that. The Cheap Michael Kors Bags will provide you cheap but high-quality products.”

Royal HaskoningDHV Bags Tanjung Priok Expansion Deal (Indonesia)

The contract is part of the North Kalibaru Terminal Development and the first phase includes the development of a new 4.5 million TEUs container terminal allowing the economic development of Indonesia to continue.

Construction of one of the world’s largest port developments has begun in Indonesia. When it completes in 2023, Jakarta’s Tanjung Priok port, which currently handles the lion’s share of Indonesia’s exports and imports, will more than triple its annual capacity to 18 million TUEs of container traffic.

The creation of North Kalibaru Port, a new terminal within the port complex,We have high quality replica breitling watches, you can not miss the best Tag Heuer Replica Watches online. will play an essential role in the development of Indonesia, strengthening the national logistics chain, increasing global competitiveness and functioning as an international hub for seaborne trade. One of Indonesia’s most prestigious public projects, the North Kalibaru Port extension was opened by Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on 23 March 2013.

State owned port operator IPC (Indonesian Port Corporation) assigned Royal HaskoningDHV as lead consultant for the supervision of the construction of Stage 1 of the port extension with local sub-consultant PT Atrya Swascipta Rekayasa. The first new container terminal is scheduled to be operational in 2014; Stage 1 will be completed in 2018.

Port development

Royal HaskoningDHV will supervise construction works including land reclamation,Find a great selection of christian louboutin shoes deals ! revetments, an access bridge, a container yard and quay structures. Herman Pals, Project Director said: “This is one of the biggest port developments at this time. It is a strategic project in terms of infrastructure development in Indonesia, so for both the port and terminal operators the stakes are high. The schedule is tight and the quality requirements are high again. At the peak of the construction period, we will mobilise a team of over 50 staff to provide the multidisciplinary expertise required to deliver the complete supervision works and to resolve any issues arising from the construction works.”

Soft soil construction

“We have some interesting challenges, as the port is being constructed on very soft soils. Standard reclamation by landfill is not possible for the first terminal, because of large ground settlements and the time required allowing the ground to settle. In our Michael Kors handbags shop, cheap Michael Kors outlet hot sale at an affordable price. This means that the first terminal, including the complete container yard, will consist of a concrete deck on foundation piles, which is rather unusual,” Herman Pals continued.

With sustainability a crucial factor in today’s world, a large part of the reclamation and landfill work for the other, future terminals will be carried out re-using material dredged from the port and from deepening the access channel. Seawater and nearby intakes will be protected from contamination with silts from the dredging,Looking for cheap rolex watches? Royal HaskoningDHV won the project after delivering the most competitive financial proposal with the best proposed methodology and team composition.

For the new residential Golf Island (300 ha) Royal HaskoningDHV is supervising the land reclamation offshore Pantai Indah Kapuk, which is the first privately owned island appearing above the water level in Jakarta Bay.

For the Jakarta Coastal Sea Defence Project, Royal HaskoningDHV is developing the institutional and financial framework to allow the Indonesian Government to manage this ambitious project to protect Jakarta against the threat from flooding.

On test: Sherpa Lithang jacket and Tsepun baselayer

Sherpa Adventure Gear is fairly new to the UK market.

What marks it out from other brands is that most of the clothing is made in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu, and the company is Sherpa owned.

The Lithang waterproof is pitched at the hillwalker or climber who doesn't want a bells and whistles jacket with tons of features, but does want to keep dry on the hill.

The first thing to say is it's a good-looking jacket. Our red sample, supplied by Sherpa, had darker contrasting panels on the high-wear areas from elbows to shoulders, and around the main ‘handwarmer' pockets.

The material, polyester rather than the more common nylon, is stiffer than many jackets in its class and it has a rugged feel to it. There's a PTFE membrane which Sherpa rates at 20,000mm waterproofing and 20,000g breathability, a match for many of the ‘own-brand' waterproofing systems found in similar garments, though not quite up to the top-performing membranes.

In practice, this didn't seem to manifest itself, as the Lithang kept out the rain admirably.

The cut of the Lithang is fairly short,Cheap christian louboutin boots on sale in our shop christian louboutin. with the rear of the jacket a little longer. The main water-resistant zip is protected at the rear by a storm flap to make sure the rain stays out.

The fabric has a slight stretchiness, and the jacket is clearly aimed at active users,Offer hermes handbags, fashion birkin handbags and other styles hermes handbags. with mobility good thanks to good sleeve articulation.

There are two upper Napoleon pockets, big enough for items such as a GPS, compass, or mobile phone. Curiously, pictures of the women's version, which we didn't test, show only one upper pocket. On our men's jacket, the left-hand upper pocket had a port to accommodate headphone cables.

The two lower handwarmer pockets are each big enough to take a laminated OS map,Offer prada bags, handbags, factory directly, More buy more discount. but are positioned in the hipbelt region, so if you're wearing a rucksack, which most people will be on their outdoor trips, the belt will have to be unfastened to gain full access to the bottom pockets.

All the pockets have water-resistant zips and are fully lined not with mesh.

And that's it for pockets: none inside; no quirky little ones on the sleeve for who knows what esoteric item. And that's fine by me. There's enough space for the essentials you're likely to need to hand: compass, map, gloves, hat. The rest can go in the rucksack.

The Lithang's design is deliberately simple and this helps keep the weight, and cost, within reason. For 200 you're getting a fully technical waterproof that compares very well with a lot of rivals on price.

The hood is plenty large enough to accommodate a helmet and the sleeves have hook and loop fasteners. There is a thinnish tricot chin guard.

The jacket has pit zips for venting, which have two-way sliders. Can any one tell if this is a authentic north face jackets?

In use, the Lithang performed well, keeping out the rain and wind. Its fabric feels robust and it was showing no signs of wear after our tests.

The only signs of wear were on the loop holding captive the rear hood adjuster, which had started to fray. This is possibly because, in common with most modern hoods,Online shopping for cheap buy christian louboutin with the lowest prices, buy Cheap Louboutin shoes online now! the cords are thin and fiddly and on the mountain top and with gloves on, there's a tendency to be ham-fisted in pulling the adjuster tight.

Once tightened properly the hood was good and turned fairly well with the head, though not as well as the best around.

they still run well at senior fashion show in Boynton Beach

They might be older models,Below are the other classic discount gucci handbags like the Timeless Clutch. but they still run well at senior fashion show in Boynton Beach

Smile. Walk. Ignore the cheers,The Canada Goose Heli-Arctic Parka has long been known as the industrial parka of the north. the whistles, even the wolf calls. Stop. Pose. Set hand on hip. Flash that “I'm almost too cool even to be here” look. Smile. Walk.

This is all old hat for models. Even the senior ones working the runway at the first “SeniorFashion Show and Holiday Spectacular,” held Wednesday at the Boynton Beach Mall.

With ABBA's Dancing Queen blaring, the 14 senior women, and six men, joined another 20 models, ages 17 down to 6.

Skye Gladstone, 70, who's about to be a grandmother for the first time, slid across the stage in a slinky black outfit with an ever-so-short skirt.

“If you're comfortable wearing this, it's certainly in style,” volunteer announcer ArleenRoberts said.

Would she? “Oh absolutely,” Skye said.

Dawn DiPaola, who'd been Miss United States in 2006 and who runs a Delray Beach modeling firm, had taught everyone how to walk the runway.

The oldest model: Dawn's grandmother, Ida Christian, 90.

Well, not quite. She's just a kid — one month younger — next to Mary Bono.

“I had my nails done,” Mary called.

She said she's a veteran at this, having modeled at her church.

“I'm so proud,” Mary said.Canada Goose offers the moncler down coats in women's styles. So, she said, is her “significant other,” who's 99.

“You gotta keep going,” she said.

Then she took the stage,Next you needs to have a carefully consider the Canada Goose Mystique Parka. waving to her adoring fans.

Participants included Diane Greenfield, 66, of Greenacres and Barbara Mandel, 74, of Delray Beach, who'd seen announcements about the event.

“I dance,” Diane said. “I do karaoke.”

Barbara allowed as how she modeled as a teenager.

Barbara had a message for the cynics who say people reach a certain age and stop being beautiful: “I think you can look great at any age.”

Before Diane's husband died two years ago, “he told me to get out there and enjoy life,” she said. Then, a bit wistfully, “my husband thought I was beautiful.”

“They are beautiful,” said Katherine Reyes of Boynton Beach, who's all of 12. Most of these people have been retired longer than she's been alive. And her friend Alexandra Santiago, downright ancient at 16, chimed in, “Every woman is beautiful.”

Some were a little shy; not among them the male model who shook his backside and blew kisses. And some were a little slow. But all walked the walk.Thank you! It's very good moncler jackets men!

One of the biggest cheers came for Angelo Porcaro, 87, snazzy in gray slacks with white necktie and white jacket, who raised a fist like a champion.

“I've got that fire!” he'd boasted before he'd gone on. Then, a little sheepishly, a confession: “I wish I did.” Followed by that smile again. And the sparkling eyes. “But at least I'm on top of the ground.”

'The X Factor' recap: The top 12, er ... 13, perform

In a twist Wednesday night that would have seemed far more shocking if the show hadn't pulled a similar stunt with Melanie Amaro last season, "The X Factor" brought back contestant Diamond White, who had been eliminated from Britney Spears' Teens team last week.

"We watched the show back and the final 12 we are very happy with," Simon Cowell announced at the top of the show, "but we believe we made a mistake with one act," adding that White had been asked to rejoin the show and become lucky No. 13.

Welcome back, Diamond.

White joined the other contestants to tackle songs from movies.

The Teens

Arin Ray performed "American Boy," by Estelle featuring Kanye West, amid sparkling lights and swaggering dancers but still managed to hold focus with his hip-shaking moves and solid vocals. "Arin, first of all, what happened to you from last year to this year?" L.A. Reid told the "X Factor" returnee, who competed as part of a group last year. "Because you're a different person than you were the first time I met you." Reid thought Ray had finally found his vocal identity. Demi Lovato thought he looked "smooth" and "like a star." Cowell complimented Spears' mentoring. And Spears thought Ray "owned it."

Beatrice Miller (mostly) overcame vocal issues to sing "Iris" by the Goo Goo Dolls – sounding a little like a three-pack-a-day 13-year-old. The issues may have hindered her range, but Reid didn't seem to notice, telling Miller the tone of her voice "sounds like a hit record … just sensational." Lovato liked the way Miller poured her soul into the song, and Cowell declared Miller to be "unbelievable," though he did note the vocal glitches.Thoughtful details such as interior security pockets make the Canada Goose Chateau Parka for an urban journey. Spears, however, is Miller's biggest fan, telling her she had the "best personality out of anybody in this whole competition."

Carly Rose Sonenclar moved on from the cheesy girlish costuming and concept Spears had heaped on her last week to show her vocal maturity and power with Bruno Mars' "It Will Rain." "That was really heartfelt," Reid told her. "It was honest -- I loved it, and I love you." Lovato thought the performance was "night and day" compared with last week's and said Sonenclar was really "in her element." Cowell said it sounded like a hit song and Sonenclar had "real guts," adding, "I've got a feeling with you,As possible ice also cooler flatulence out with Canada Goose Womens New heavy-duty parka. Carly, we're watching a star in the making." Spears again rolled out the big compliments, telling her mentee, "You should have closed the show, because nobody can follow that."

Diamond White stepped out in a snappy white ladytux and sang Whitney Houston's "I Have Nothing," hoping to prove the judges' were right to bring her back. It may not have been her best performance (she was a little stiff), but Reid, noting that the song choice was "ambitious," thought White "brought it home." Lovato felt the performance "tugged at her heart." Cowell declared that "dreams can come true," thought the whole thing was great, and said he was so glad White was back in the competition. Spears said White "definitely channeled Whitney and she would be very proud."

Young Adults

CeCe Frey brought back her leopard spots (or whatever animal they're supposed to evoke) for her amateurish, frequently off-key and breathless take on Survivor's "Eye of the Tiger," during which she very deliberately took a moment to show off the revealingly sheer bodysuit she wore under a red satiny jacket. (Was she supposed to look like a circus ringmaster or some kind of military dictator?) Reid reluctantly admitted he hadn't been blown away by the performance. Spears thought she was a "little rebel" who "brought fire," but Cowell said that anything he'd liked about Frey to start with (whatever that was) had been "thrown away" and that the song choice was "just horrible." "Cece, you are being taken into a direction you shouldn't be going into," Cowell said, slamming mentor Lovato without mentioning her directly,The Canada Goose Constable Parka has long been known as the industrial parka of the north. and saying Frey should be making her own song choices. After Cowell's critique, Frey looked furious. (Maybe don't stand so close, Mario Lopez.) Eye of the tiger, indeed.

Jennel Garcia, who is pretty much unrecognizable compared with the soft-and-sweet-on-the-outside, sexy-on-the-inside small-town girl we met in auditions, sang a leathery "I Love Rock and Roll." Reid more-or-less rightly called it a "Joan Jett parody" lacking in originality and inventiveness. Spears,Cheap Moncler Coats outlet we offer,Canada Goose Expedition Parka Sale Store. on the other hand, thought it was "hot, hot, hot." Cowell again piled on Garcia's mentor,Cheap Canada Goose Jackets outlet Canada Goose Trillium Parka. telling her he hated what Lovato had done to her look and that she wasn't challenging her musically, either. "You are better than this," he told Garcia. "You really are." "That's why I'm her mentor, and you're not," snapped Lovato, maintaining that the young women in the audience had loved Garcia's performance.

Paige Thomas withstood a pretty serious costume malfunction – her flowy skirt blew waaay up to reveal her unexpectedly sturdy-looking underwear – and a guy manhandling her and dragging his lips across her neck to deliver solid vocals on Berlin's "Take My Breath Away." It was quite a production, and Reid thought it was "amazing" but for the song itself, which he called "good" but not "great." Spears also complimented the production values, which she thought were "shockingly" good. And Cowell didn't miss another opportunity to slam Lovato (who, I suddenly remembered, is an anti-bullying spokeswoman), saying he thought the production was overwrought and lacked imagination. Lovato has obviously learned to stick up for herself over the years and wasn't taking Cowell's mean-girl act sitting down. "Obviously, everybody in the audience disagrees with you," she told him. Snap.
