“My Fair Lady” takes us back to the ultra-fem look, with the ladylike blouses, retro touches and glamour and glitz for day and night. How to pull it off? Seek out peplums, pussycat bows and Peter Pan collars, waist definition and dressmaker touches like ruching and wrapping. Also, feminine dresses with a hint of nostalgia and textiles like lush wools, silk, satin,duvetica jackets lace, lamé and sequins — for day. Add prints: python, paisley, baroque patterns and intense doses of color. And statement pendants, grand earrings, long chains and bold cuffs top this look off.

“Mod Modern” is a '60s-inspired motif emphasized by sleek lines, color blocking/banding, shift dresses and slim pants. Structured knits, ponte, melton wools, leather and New Age synthetics are key fabrics here, and there are graphic, often computer-generated patterns, with checks, bold plaids, dots, snake, Mondrian-like blocks and bars.

“Town and Country” style is big on craftsmanship, texture and luxury with tweeds, denim, silk, flannel casual and dressy fabrics in the same look, plus lots of patterns such as plaids, English florals, checks and cheetah (you can even mix, say, delicate florals with new tartans, as long as they have at least one color in common).

Items that define this look: British tan-colored boots and handbags in rich vintage leathers, felt fedoras and cloches, skinny belts, bold gold jewelry, chunky knit caps and mufflers.

“Vivid,” summed up as “a chromatic crescendo of maximalist color,” pairs rich hues with unexpected neutrals, such as tomato red paired with elephant gray, cobalt with true navy, and bright fuchsia mixed with deep eggplant.

Optimism & Opulence Dominate the Catwalks at London Fashion Week.

London certainly upped its game this season with the likes of Belstaff, McQueen's diffusion line – McQ, Moschino – Cheap and Chic and Stella McCartney joining the schedule. They say weather is a national obsession in Britain — but perhaps more for Burberry Prorsum's Christopher Bailey than for most.

With a clap of thunder and a torrent of realistic rain running down the sides of a glass tent, the luxury brand's creative chief sent his umbrella-toting models down the catwalk in a finale that brought a smile to everyone's face.

Burberry, which stages its twice yearly runway shows in its own temporary Hyde Park tent, is the biggest and glitziest production during London Fashion Week. On Monday, the autumn and winter 2012 display drew a huge crowd of buyers and spectators, including a host of international stars such as Hollywood actress Kate Bosworth, celebrity photographer Mario Testino, and even Korean pop group Girls' Generation.

"I quite like celebrating rain,cheap canada goose" said Bailey, who has been credited with revitalizing the once-fusty fashion house and boosting its international style credentials. He's also known to create a spectacle using weather elements: Last year, he filled his catwalk with fake snow.

Menswear creeps up on Fashion Week's centre stage

Menswear, the perennial poor relation of women's high fashion, is staking a larger claim on the lucrative fashion stage, as retailers tap a growing men's clothing market and runways in New York reflect American men's rising interest in high fashion.

Never in the vanguard of U.S. fashion, menswear is striving to catch up,canada goose parka jackets say fashion experts taking stock of the collections showing at New York's Fashion Week which runs through Thursday.

With the luxury menswear market growing at about 14 percent a year, or nearly double that of luxury womenswear, according to consultancy Bain & Co., the financial stakes are high.

"High fashion menswear used to be a bit of a joke, but it's becoming a genuine influence. It's beginning to duplicate women's wear," said David Wolfe, creative director of retail consultants Doneger Group.

A demographic that was once "style conscious young men and very label conscious," is "now grown up, and bringing that same style sensitivity and label snobbery as adults," Wolfe said.

Tom Julian, author and retail trends expert, noted growth in the expanding $50 billion-plus menswear arena for clothing such as jeans, knits and accessories.

Julian cited major retailers like Saks adding a denim room, and Ralph Lauren's new Rugby concept. With about a dozen stand-alone stores, Rugby specializes in edgier styling and lower prices targeting younger shoppers than Ralph Lauren's traditional clientele.

"There is more interest in tailoring touches for sportswear," he noted. Accordingly, "casual has shifted beyond what was — khakis and button-downs. Unstructured or knit jackets, sweater jackets and the like allow for layering and individualizing."

The collections at New York's Fashion Week, when hundreds of designers show both men's and women's fall lines, bore that out.

And like the women's shows, some of which displayed hallmarks of popular 1920s-era films like "The Artist" and "Midnight in Paris," menswear took a page from the popular "Downton Abbey" British TV series, set on the eve of the 20s, with heavy use of cord, velvet and grosgrain trims and round-collar shirts.

DRESSED-UP CASUAL

Wolfe characterized the looks as "much more well-behaved than 'rebel rocker,'" while Julian noted that "men have embraced colour in unexpected ways — a bright coloured check shirt, the coloured chinos, the coloured shoes."

"Many men today like the idea of taking a tailored item like a blazer or a necktie and making it less formal to play into their look," Julian noted.

Tommy Hilfiger's ambitious show on Friday reflected trends seen throughout the week: quilted sleeves and vests, lots of narrow horizontal stripes, high-collared doubled breasted coats topping striped vertiginous turtlenecks.

While Hilfiger showed a lot of leather, it was softer, nonthreatening and decidedly non-biker. Unstructured jackets suggested English schoolboys, while colours included dark rose, greys, mustard, teal and lots of reds.

John Bartlett, who once hewed closely to militaristic influences, showed plaid vests, checked pants that suggested pyjamas and blanket coats that paid homage to LL Bean's Hudson Bay classic. Even his motorcycle and racing jackets revealed softer, less-structured tailoring. Splashes of yellow and orange livened the looks even more.

Plaids and checks also figured highly at Duckie Brown's show, which made heavy use of textured grey and charcoal fabrics including tweeds. Crocheted sleeveless tops typified many of the relatively un-macho looks.

Richard Chai's show meanwhile was dominated by denim and blue work clothes, featuring car coats and separates in a range of sombre tones of grey, black and charcoal.

"Even affluent men are questioning whether fashion is the best use of their money," noted Candace Corlett, president of retail strategies consultancy WSL Strategic Retail.

"That says there has to be a semblance of utility, function and longevity — it's got to span a few seasons, even a few year and withstand the hot and cold of trends."

There were still more plaids and nubby fabrics to be seen at Robert Geller, who showed looks mostly in grey, charcoal and black. Edwardian-influenced models sported oversized, wrapped neck scarves, while trousers were rolled up above the ankles. A poncho coat was emblematic of some designers' voluminous cuts.

From Rag and Bone came more horizontal stripes for pants, jackets and sweaters, while topcoats featured wide fleece-accented lapels that suggested the shawl collars that could be found on sweaters and outerwear of many collections.

"We're finishing dress-down casual and moving to a dressed-up casual," Wolfe observed. "The changes are subtle, mostly in colour and fabric, with colours moving richer and fabrics more luxurious."

"It's nothing too challenging, which would scare the average guy off. But we now have a generation of men who shop for themselves instead of their mothers or wives doing it for them."

Images tell Maier's dual story

Few things fascinate like a double life. And nanny Vivian Maier had one.

Her workaday world involved minding the children of well-to-do Chicago families. But Maier's private life was her own, closely guarded and hidden from view.

Until now. After Maier died at 83, she moved from obscurity to art world prominence.

In 2007 a Chicago auction was held of a mysterious cache of negatives found in an abandoned storage locker. In a serendipitous move, Chicago real estate agent John Maloof paid $400 for the images. Maloof essentially discovered the enormous output of this unknown nanny, who turned out to be a talented street photographer who took thousands of photos during her lifetime but never shared them with anyone.

Maier's photographs have proved to be a treasure trove of a unique photographic sensibility and a window into 1950s and 1960s America, as seen through one woman's eyes.

For anyone who romanticizes the 1950s or '60s as a more innocent, less brutal time, Maier gives evidence to the contrary in her shots of disheveled drunks, the homeless, a man being hauled away by the police or the carcass of a dead horse and a road kill cat in city gutters.

Maloof has published a book, “Vivian Maier: Street Photographer,” featuring some of the exceptional black and white images Maier shot. And since that inspired initial purchase in 2007, Maloof has acquired more than 100,000 of Maier's images.

Following his lead, an entire cottage industry of Maier interest has arisen, with gallery exhibitions, a documentary film in the works and the emergence of another collector, Jeff Goldstein, who procured his own collection of Maier prints and a catalog of 15,000 negatives.

Atlantans can see fascinating photographs drawn from the Goldstein archives that make up a small portion of Maier's impressive body of work at Buckhead's Jackson Fine Art, where 20 contemporary prints and seven vintage prints are on view.

Though she's been characterized as a slightly eccentric Mary Poppins-type who would whisk her young charges away to the Chicago stockyards, art films or a Chinese New Year parade for a field trip, don't expect anything Disney from Maier's work.

A streak of sophisticated wit is evident in images like one shot through a father's milk-white legs as he hefts a chunky baby out of the ocean surf. In an equally funny image of large-meets-small, a chubby toddler sitting on a blanket hefts a baby doll above its head. The doll's humorously sideways expression suggests a tiny creature caught in Godzilla's clutches.

In addition to gravitating toward such funny views of daily life, Maier's images are equally arresting for their formal properties, including a real knack for off-kilter compositions.

Maier never married or had any children, yet her images capture the unique spirit of children. She was clearly very fond of them. An image of a young boy, dressed up and sporting eyeglasses with a lens blacked out with paper — suggesting an injury of some kind — is a heartbreaker. He's standing in the road and his vulnerability is palpable.

While some photographers render children cute, Maier's images suggest their complex interior lives, a circumstance she no doubt learned while on the job.

City life is another favorite Maier theme, conveyed in images of a homeless man folded into himself, crouched on a city sidewalk.

Never dwelling in just one key, Maier also conveyed the joy and vibrancy of city life, in groups of African-American children playing on the streets or a humorous shot of an intertwined couple kissing on a beach, lost to the teeming crowds around them.

But such hired help is also kept at a distance. Snowplow crews toil day and night to clear Issaquah streets

Come winter, the nonstop struggle between man and Mother Nature unfolds in a teeth-rattling ride aboard city snowplows.

Snow, split into quarters from tire tracks, clung to the streets late Tuesday afternoon in Montreux, a tony neighborhood on Cougar Mountain named for a city in the Swiss Alps. In methodical maneuvers, city snowplow driver Kyle Patterson edged back and forth along cul-de-sac after cul-de-sac, pushing snow from the roadway to form dirt-flecked berms along the street.

In the process, snow cascades from the plow and light powder is compacted into something more akin to spackle.

Each large snowplow truck in the city fleet resembles a mustard-yellow box atop gargantuan tires, a Tonka toy for a giant. Empty, a large truck tips the scales at about 30,000 pounds. Loaded, full of sand and de-icing fluid, the total balloons to about 60,000 pounds.

(The city operates seven snowplow trucks, a larger model for main roads and a smaller model for difficult-to-maneuver side streets.)

The drivers, dressed in fluorescent jackets the same color as a highlighter pen, ride in the snowplow cabs beneath a flashing amber light. Most drivers use earplugs to block noise from the rumbling engine and brakes screeching like a pterodactyl.

The constant use amid harsh weather exacts a toll on the vehicles, despite the trucks’ tank-like resilience.

Dave Boyle, a city heavy equipment mechanic dubbed a “savior” by snowplow drivers, mends the wear-and-tear on the trucks. The most common issues stem from chains on the tires, brake components and the rubber plow edges, he said.

Motorists present another challenge to snowplow crews.

Though the snowplows carry a sign on the rear to remind motorists to remain at least 100 feet from the vehicle — “some people follow it, some don’t,” Patterson said — and a flashing light, motorists sometimes drive too close in the hope to ride on clear streets.

In Issaquah, road conditions differ from neighborhood to neighborhood, due to changes in elevation.

Snow might blanket Forest Rim — Squak Mountain’s highest-elevation neighborhood — even as the lowlands remain bare. Other neighborhoods at higher elevations, such as the Issaquah Highlands and Talus, also require additional scrutiny from road crews.

(Outside Issaquah city limits, King County Roads Services Division teams handle roads in the unincorporated county and the state Department of Transportation is responsible for interstate and state highways.)

The snow offered the initial test. Forecasters called for snow to turn to rain Friday, and for temperatures to climb into the 40s. The abrupt shift means Public Works Operations crews could face flooding in Issaquah before the week concludes.

So, teams delivered generators to key sites throughout the city to run pump stations if electricity failed amid the snowstorm. Officials also stationed utility trucks across Issaquah. If the snowstorm led to flooding later, crews planned to swap chainsaws meant for hacking apart fallen trees for road closure signs to direct motorists around floodwaters.

“We’ve been through this so many times before that we know,” Jeffrey Estrin, a longtime city maintenance worker, said during a drive around the city late Tuesday afternoon.

In the meantime, crews criss-crossed the city to remove snow from streets. High on Squak Mountain, Estrin rolled down a window to address a resident building a snowman on a snow-covered island in a cul-de-sac’s center.
