“Look, a lot of women watch this show across Africa, more than men, so I think some of the things I did in the house did not sit well with them,” she said.

“For example, I had never worn a bikini and walked around people, but when I got into the house I thought, why not? Some people may have found that tasteless.

“I am also an assertive person who says what’s on her mind, so I don’t back down. These traits are unattractive in a game like this.”

Now we wait to see what becomes of these two.

Denial has always been a theme in the series: Tobias's unself-conscious double entendres, the family's inability to deal with their change in class status, Michael's doomed romance with Mr. F (a "mentally retarded female"). An audience knowing something that the characters do not is a tool utilized by a lot of, if not all, comedy; to my mind, great comedy usually balances an audience's knowledge with characters' wit. (Though great comedy also comes when fools turn out to have more wisdom than anyone.) While stupid-people-doing-stupid-things is a staple of box office hits and Bravo, it's more difficult and I think more rewarding if the characters aren't idiots — unable to see the obvious — but simply blinded to the obvious by something: love or greed or arrogance, the kind of things that can blind any of us. That kind of comedy cuts closer to home and with a sharper blade. We can laugh not at just the confusion and high jinks onscreen but at our own narrow escape from the same kind of consequences. We know (or like to think) we're not Deuce Bigalow, but Bassanio? Maybe. "Ha" is always better when accompanied by "Whew."

And I think that's why I found Season 4 — thus far, OK, just the three episodes in; I'll try to be patient — unsatisfying so far: The Bluths are idiots. They're not just misguided or greedy or egotistical, they seem to be just plain dumb. The George Bluth of the first three seasons would never mistake blueprints of a wall for a monument five miles tall. And Seasons 1-3 Michael was the grounded guy, the straight man who wound up in ridiculous situations because he was trying to set things right. It's true that Lindsay was always the flighty one, not knowing if the wetlands were to be saved, or dried, or saved from drying, though by the end of any given episode she was usually less hapless than disgusted with herself. Judge again sentences Laurence Lovette to life without parole for murdering Eve Carson

For the second time in 18 months, an Orange County judge on Monday sentenced Laurence Alvin Lovette to a lifetime in prison for murdering UNC-Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson in 2008.

Lovette, 22, and his attorneys called psychologist James Hilkey as their sole witness in an effort to persuade Judge Allen Baddour that the convicted killer should have an opportunity for parole 25 years from now.

Hilkey said that he found Lovette to be a “cold, callous, unsympathetic and self-centered individual” when they first met in August 2008, almost six months after Carson was murdered.

But since then, Hilkey said he has developed a slightly different opinion, that he had seen some compassion in Lovette, but finding it was akin to “peeling back an onion.”

Hilkey testified that he could not say for certain that Lovette was so “irretrievably corrupted” that there was not a possibility for rehabilitation. But he also conceded upon cross-examination by District Attorney Jim Woodall that there also was a possibility that Lovette would not change for the better during his years in prison.

Lovette, who did not testify at his trial and awaits trial in a second murder case in Durham, spoke against the advice of his attorneys.

“People make mistakes,” Lovette said. “Nobody’s perfect. I’m not the monster y’all made me out to be.”

Carson’s body was found near dawn in the middle of the street in a wooded Chapel Hill neighborhood about a mile from her home and the UNC campus. She had been shot four times with a handgun and once with a shotgun. Atwater, who is serving life in prison for murder, kidnapping, robbery and carjacking, fired the shotgun. Lovette fired the first four shots, investigators said.

“This is one of the most heinous crimes I’ve ever prosecuted,” Woodall told Baddour on Monday.

With Carson’s parents sitting behind him, Woodall described their daughter as a college student doing the right thing. She was studying when Lovette and Atwater came into her home. They drove her around as she pleaded with her assailants and asked them to pray with her.

When Lovette was arrested on charges of kidnapping, robbery and murder, he was living with his mother, Melissa Lovette, on Shepherd Street in Durham.

Melissa Lovette ran a small day-care business in the basement of their home – midway between Duke University and N.C. Central University, where her husband and Lovette’s father had worked.

This year is shaping up to be busy for local retail professionals, as malls fill in empty spaces vacated by stores that didn’t survive the recession and developers resume work on stalled projects.

International Council of Shopping Centers spokesman Jesse Tron said recently that retailers and shopping centers are adapting to a new normal in the post recession.

“It’s now more about value creation and asset management than growing portfolios. It’s about having the most productive store or shopping center that we can have,” Tron said. “Centers nationwide are adding retailers, but not generally building new shopping centers, which is controlling the vacancy issue.”

Local centers with new tenants abound now, with many outlets getting a slew of new shops this year.
