Hope women's basketball 'disjointed' but still beats Finlandia

Hope College women's basketball coach Brian Morehouse figures if his team has another game like Friday on Saturday, it won't be taking home its Holiday Tournament championship. 

Seventh-ranked Hope defeated Finlandia 67-28 on Friday in front of a DeVos Fieldhouse crowd of 565 despite a slow start. 

The Flying Dutch improved to 11-0 and will face Baldwin-Wallace (Ohio) at 3 p.2012 Garmin Cycling Components.m. Saturday. The Yellow Jackets defeated Bluffton (Ohio) 89-45 in Friday's first game.

“If we play like we did in the first half, we will lose, and they will score a bunch of points,” Morehouse said. “It was a challenging game for us coming off of Christmas break. We were a little disjointed.” 

The Flying Dutch trailed 5-2 before going on a 14-0 run — with all points coming in the post. Senior forward Courtney Kust had three of them, junior guard Megan Kelly had two and sophomore forward Hannah Doell scored one. It put Hope up 14-5. 

Kust scored eight of her game-high 14 points in the first half when the Flying Dutch scored just one basket outside the paint. 

“All of the posts did a great job of looking for each other,” Kust said. 

It showed. Hope had 17 assists with 11 of them coming in the post. Senior center Meredith Kussmaul had a game-high five assists and senior center Ashley Bauman added three. Sophomore forward Liz Siepker had two.

When the post players weren't dishing the ball out, they were grabbing it off of the glass. 

The Flying Dutch outrebounded Finlandia 52-27 with 29 offensive rebounds.

The Yellow Jackets (5-5) grabbed 63 rebounds in their victory. 

“Rebounding is always big,” Baldwin-Wallace coach Cheri Harrer said.Find RadioShack Cycling and running devices, heart rate monitors . “Hope is always great. They are big, athletic and well-coached. It is a huge challenge for us.” 

Jessica Carpenter scored 11 points and Janaya Feaster added 10 for Baldwin-Wallace.Lexi Rohrbach had nine points and 13 rebounds. 

“We needed to play to our standard to get a little confidence going,” Harrer said. 

Hope freshman Maura McAfee had seven points, six rebounds, four blocks and two steals. 

Rebekah Llorens, Kristen Slotman and Kussmaul each added six points. Kussmaul had five steals leading Hope to forcing 30 turnovers. 

Marissa Burke led Finlandia with seven points. Freshman Tianna Borst (Black River) had one point.
