Racy Halloween costumes prove popular this year

Heather Lawrence and Jessica Miller, of Plover, enjoyed some sisterly bonding Tuesday while costume shopping for Halloween.

According to the National Retail Federation in Washington, D.C., more than one-third of Americans will look to retail stores for costume ideas this Halloween season.

Stuart Schmitt, who co-owns both the seasonal Costume Shoppe in Stevens Point with his father, has been selling costumes for most of his life.

Many of the shop’s costumes are not for the modest. Customers browsing the racks will see skin-tight, shorter versions of police uniforms, superhero costumes and fairy gowns.

“I’ve heard it a hundred times,” Schmitt said. “Girls will come in here and say, ‘Halloween is my one night to wear whatever I want and get away with it.’”

But not everything in the store is inappropriate for church. Schmitt has a few items he thinks would be acceptable for younger women attending a faculty-supervised school bash.

“I’d probably recommend a men’s costume or one of these cow costumes here,It's no longer something women wear to make a statement. Paired with duvetica jackets and black tights.” he said, laughing and nodding toward the cow racks. “We tried doing away with the cows a while ago, but it’s Wisconsin. Cows are always in demand.”

Schmitt said now is the time to shop, because he’s only open in the city for the month of October, and his selection isn’t going to get any better.

Amelia Hanks, 22, said she already has stopped by the store twice this year. She said she is pretty set on dressing like a vampire this Halloween, but she likes to check out the new inventory with friends.

The Mid-State Technical College student said she doesn’t think a sexy costume necessarily means a skin-bearing one. In addition to the Halloween season on the way, "J" as he prefers to be called has long advertised a penchant for skulls. So, Halloween Adventure, with its myriad costumes and flair for gore, was the perfect place for our meeting.

And it was everything I dreamed it would be.

Despite our ... divergent ideas on how to have a good time, J's lust for, among other things, life is contagious and perhaps motivating. His genuine appreciation for every opportunity that has been afforded to him outshines any proclamation about the lifestyle he revels in. "I feel like if you put your mind to it, set yourself some goals, just do it," he related about how he plans on conquering his five-year-plan of being the black Bill Gates (a sight he also set on "I'm Ballin' "), and throwing a party on the moon and bringing myself and the camera guys along (a resounding yes to that RSVP). Sure it sounds silly, but it's a drive he applies just as directly to his career.

The Way I Was

As a Jewish gay man, I know that Barbra Streisand should be a double icon. A strong woman with a knack for musicals, she's in the gay pantheon right next to Audrey Hepburn and, l'havdil, Madonna. And for Jews, of course, she's the one who made it big, and did it her way: no name change, no nose job, no hiding of the intense Brooklyn accent, and still she got to kiss Robert Redford (and Kris Kristofferson… and Don Johnson… and James Brolin… and so on).

But can I make a confession? The first Streisand vehicle I experienced was “Yentl,” in 1983, followed by surreptitious listenings to my parents' copy of “The Broadway Album” on vinyl. By the time I came of age, Streisand was past her prime, at least in terms of celebrity. Indeed, whereas today I look back on “Yentl” as perhaps the absurd apogee of her status as a gay icon — Barbra in drag! — at the time, it seemed like yet another Jewish movie. When it comes to Babs, I missed the boat.

This month, Streisand's coming home to Brooklyn, performing five minutes away from my place in Park Slope. Yet, though Streisand will be close by geographically, she remains culturally distant. Streisand's Brooklyn and Barclays's Brooklyn are each far removed from my own. Certainly that's been my experience, not just with Streisand, but also with a host of other gay and Jewish icons, as well. By the time I was old enough to appreciate them, Mel Brooks and Woody Allen had already produced their most famous work. And if I can confess my gay-Jewish sin here, in the spirit of the recent holiday season, I still haven't seen “Funny Girl.”

I'm blending the Jewish and the queer here for several reasons. Let's start with Streisand's own very Jewish queerness. First,Nicki Sorensen claimed victory in the final race of the SAXO BANK Cycling season. she, like Bette Midler, got her start playing seedy gay clubs and bars. Second, and more important, her refusal to conform to Hollywood standards of beauty marked her as Other: not just the nose, but also the Jew-fro (at least throughout the 1970s), the accent and the other markers of Jewishness. She stood out, and demanded to be seen as she was. Finally, there's the gender-bending. Streisand is tough, that's obvious; everyone knows that she's not going to take any crap from anyone. Predating Madonna by two decades (and Lady Gaga by four), she took charge of her own career, and refused to play damsels in distress. Barbra Streisand is a strong woman in an industry dominated by macho men. She didn't need a costume department to dress like a yeshiva boy (although, Honey, that drag just does not pass…); she'd already worn the pants in her life for 20 years.

Is this Jewish? Is it Brooklyn? Is it queer? Yes to all three. Really, one of the things I've never understood about Jewish homophobia is how it coexists with millennia of Jewish queerness. Strong mothers and bookish fathers. A religious legacy of “not by might, not by power,He presented his work through the outfits canada goose parka,and shirts of colours counting blue, green, dark green and sky blue. but by spirit” — complete with biblical narratives of wimpy younger boys triumphing over their bullying older brothers. And if you've read your Naomi Seidman, you already know about pervasive gender-bending and homosocial love in Yiddish literature and culture. I didn't need Queer Theory and the Jewish Question or Daniel Boyarin's books to make the Jewish-queer link explicit: I lived it in day school.

Fall fashion checklist

In anticipation of SouthPark mall's upcoming Simon Now fashion show, SouthPark Magazine sat down with the show's mastermind, style expert Jacqué Ellis, to get the dish on the hottest looks for fall. The SouthPark Simon Now Fashion weekend, Oct. 19 and 20, will feature free runway shows, beauty events and more.

What is this season's hottest trend?

Unpredictable leather. I've been seeing leather in new places. Leather skirts, dresses, jackets and leggings are in. Leather is fun and versatile, and designers see that. They have made it a more feminine fabric this season. There's lots of leather variety this fall, and you can't go wrong with a leather jacket and a great pair of jeans.

How do you pull off the season's adventurous pieces, like leather leggings?

Leather leggings with a short dress or tunic are fantastic options for everyday. You'll look great in whatever you put on as long as you wear it with confidence. Every trend isn't for everyone; not every woman will be comfortable in leather leggings and that's fine. Fashion is something to have fun with. If you don't feel good in it, you shouldn't try to force it.

What about other trends? I've heard a lot about peplums.

The ‘40s and '50s peplum is back in tops and jackets. The peplum is a fitted style that hugs the chest and torso and flares out at the waist. A subtle hint of animal and reptile prints in accessories is another trend. These prints are showing up on belts, blazer accents and shoes. Animal prints take go-to pieces like the knit sweater and make them current yet classic. Lastly, structured handbags and cross body satchels are practical and undeniably popular this fall.

Which styles this season are designed to look great on certain body types or ages?

Cardigans are flattering on any body type or age and, according to what accessories you use, can be worn at the office, on a date or while lounging at home. Shapely knits with interesting accessories are everywhere. Blazers are the other universal fit hit of this season. Slightly long, tailored blazers are great for all women. For older and plus size women, be wary of cropped blazers.

Step aside little black dress, and make way for the little red dress! I recommend Gap's leather jacket; it looks irresistible and has an equally attractive price tag. But you don't need to buy everything that is trendy to be fashionable. With each season, focus on what you are attracted to and feel comfortable in, like a basic leather jacket. From there, build a wardrobe that never goes out of style.

What's one of your favorite timeless looks?

From season to season, I see shift dresses. It's a very wearable style that complements a lot of body types and ages. Make sure you focus on outfits that layer and thus transition well between seasons. If given the choice, buy trendy accessories over trendy outfits.

Sweater dresses. They're easy to wear and don't require any styling. They are versatile. And sweater dresses put up with long days of work or travel. Pair them with tights or boots in the fall. You'll look great no matter what!

How would you define the difference between style and fashion?

Fashion encompasses the current trends. Style is a personal translation of those trends. There are no hard and fast rules in style. There's just good taste.

How would you describe Charlotte's style?

If I had to describe Charlotte's style in one word it would be classic. Yet Charlotteans are not afraid to have fun with fashion and play up their outfits with great accessories, handbags and shoes. I've seen a dramatic evolution of the city and its fashion in the past five years. Even children are fashionable here. You all are a fun audience at shows -- lots of attitude! All of this goes to say that SouthPark is one of my top three favorite malls in the country. I love Charlotte; it has fantastic restaurants and is such a friendly place!

How did you first become interested in fashion?

I grew up in a small town an hour away from Indianapolis. Some of my favorite memories as a kid were spent at a mall with my mom and girlfriends on our “power shopping” trips. We'd go out to fun restaurants, watch mall fashion shows and get our makeup done. I love my job because I get to see mothers with their girls continue to experience those positive moments I had with my mom.

What gave you the idea to create Simon Fashion Now?

I started Simon Fashion Now to connect everyday fashionistas to the runway. At Fashion Week there is nothing worse than seeing a beautiful piece and then not being able to have it. I wanted to showcase items that shoppers could afford and easily find at their mall.

After 16 years in the fashion business, what is your number one piece of fashion advice?

Sometimes people get so wrapped up in what is trending and try to incorporate it all. Instead, save your money and time and stick to what fits your personal style. There aren't as many rules in fashion as there used to be because the retail and design world provide such a variety of clothing options. So don't be afraid to be wrong. Feel confident in expressing your own sense of style. Fashion shouldn't be serious; it should be fun.

Penn State costume designer enjoys creating illusions with elaborate outfits, makeup

She pinned together blue broadcloth strips, the start of sleeves for a sailor’s jacket. Her fingers moved quickly but precisely. More was at stake than impressing neighbors on their doorsteps.

In less than two weeks, the jacket will transform an actor during a dress rehearsal of “Sweeney Todd.” Six days later,He identified the shooter as a black man in his 20s with dreadlocks and wearing a moncler coats. on Oct. 19, the Penn State production opens.

“There’s always deadlines,” said Elder, a School of Theatre associate professor who specializes in costume technology and design and stage make-up.He presented his work through the outfits canada goose parka,and shirts of colours counting blue, green, dark green and sky blue. “That’s kind of good — keeps us motivated. Just about when we’re sick of a show, it opens. We can move onto something new.”

For the time being, she and her colleagues in the school’s costume shop have their hands full stitching early Victorian costumes for an entire cast. Sewing machines clatter. Partial outfits adorn the torsos of dress forms, gradually taking shape piece by piece.

“You’re creating something,” said Patricia Armagast, the school’s costume supervisor. “I consider us artists in a way, because we’re creating something out of nothing.”

Elder, of Bellefonte, has devoted most of her life to the art of illusion. She has aged people, restored youth or turned them into monsters. From her stagecraft magic have come rogues and heroes, commoners and aristocrats, a census worth of characters spanning from factual to fantastic.

Before lights bathe the stage, she plays a key part in every show — the conjurer making figures come alive out of whole cloth.

“These audience members who come in are ready and willing to step out from their own environment and walk into the new environment of a play,” Elder said.Plain knee length kurtas with straight pajamas and canada goose parka jacket looked elegant and wearable. “I think that’s the excitement and pride of our whole experience.”

A stitch in time

Elder is building a costume — this time with a body inside.With raw silk saris worn under cropped cheap canada goose and thin belts.

In a corner of the shop, she and Richard St. Clair, the school’s head of costume design, are conducting a fitting of a male “Sweeney Todd” actor.

As with all theatrical costumes, the outfit began as a watercolor rendering, probably with sample fabric swatches attached. Renderings serve as blueprints for costume designers, who also rely on historical research when working with directors to achieve desired appearances.

Playing an English gent from the 1830s, the “Sweeney Todd” actor wears a hybrid costume: pants recycled from another show; jacket made in house; high-ankle, leather boots donated by a Broadway musical after it closed. St. Clair tries out bow ties on the actor’s ruffly white shirt.

“Grow sideburns,” St. Clair says after suggesting the addition of facial hair. “That would give you more of a period look.”

Meanwhile, Elder circles the standing actor. Fittings are for making alterations — not just so that the final product fits better but also to help actors meet production demands, such as having to change quickly or move props between scenes.

Elder once designed a three-piece suit costume that zippered in the back, like a jumpsuit, for easy removal. On this afternoon, the demands for a background actor are more simple. She tugs here, shifts there, calling out modifications to a student logging them in the “show bible.” That’s the master binder with research notes and costume details for every character in a production.

“I think we need to move the suspender buttons up because the front waistband is popping down,” she says.

A few tweaks later, Elder is done. Stepping back, she surveys the new figure complete with a jaunty hat perched on his head.

“Look at you — very Dickensian,” she says.

Long ago, I discovered that if you wanted to open a conversation with a woman in a club, you simply had to go up to her and say, in your best cockney accent – and in a tone of genuine curiosity – ‘Hello, darlin', what you got in that handbag?'

It worked for me every time – and never better, indeed, than when the woman in question didn't actually have a handbag. But on the night I first spotted Rachel Hunter – at an LA nightclub – reason deserted me.

Smoothing my jacket, checking the knot on my tie and gathering all the immense quantities of suavity in my possession, I went across to her and . . . did the naffest thing I could possibly have done.

I actually mimed one of the exercises I'd seen her doing in a television commercial for a fitness video. What was I playing at? Why didn't I just use my usual ice-breaker?

Needless to say, it didn't work: Rachel attempted a sympathetic smile as a cold wind whistled and a ball of tumbleweed blew through the club. Still, at least she didn't turn away . . . extraordinary to think that this less than promising start led to a romance that redefined the term ‘whirlwind' and then to an eight-year-marriage that would eventually leave me as emotionally broken as I have ever been.

That summer of 1990, I'd become so addicted to watching Rachel's commercial for a fitness video that promised ‘eight weeks to a better body' that life had to stop whenever it came on TV.

The advert also starred Elle Macpherson and Cheryl Tiegs, but the model who'd caught my attention was the Lycra-clad girl with the gorgeous shock of curls who promised to ‘tighten up those frustrating areas that won't go away'.

I thought I'd seen a goddess. So when, by a sensational fluke, I came across Rachel in the Roxbury Club that night, she was literally my video dream made flesh. I had that weird, double-take feeling: ‘It's her. Off the telly.'

I told her and the friend she was with that I was having a little gathering at my place later, if they fancied coming along. And when they finally arrived, I dropped, rather shamefully, the woman I'd been warmly chatting up – TV actress and Playboy model Teri Copley – like a hot brick.

Coming through the front door, Rachel had tripped and gone sliding across the slippery hall floor – her grand entrance. So now at least we'd both embarrassed ourselves.

There was a connection straight away. She was extremely beautiful, but there was something no-nonsense about her as well. It was there in her New Zealand accent, but also in her face, which was open and smart.

Not only was she as far removed as could be from the stereotype of the flaky model, but she already had money and fame. That was a relief. In my position, that suspicion was always there: does this woman really like me, or just the stuff that surrounds me?

And there was a naivety about Rachel, too – of course there was. After all, she was just shy of her 21st birthday. I was 45, so there were nearly 25 years between us. But it wasn't that she was too young for me. She was, quite simply, too young: too young to get married, too young to become caught up in another person's life, which is what happened.

Christ, she'd barely lived. But I didn't see it. I just sailed on.
