The boyfriend of the late Amy Winehouse was optimistic of having a relationship with a woman he is accused of twice raping while she slept, a court heard today.

Traviss said the pair had consensual sex at his flat in the early hours of New Year's Eve after getting merrily drunk together at three bars in central London. 

Today he told the jury of six men and six women he had not been out for several months "whatsoever" after Amy Winehouse died. 

He said the 27-year-old complainant seduced him by inviting him to bed when they got to his flat in Devonshire Street in the capital. 

The film director, who was going out with the Back to Black star when she died in July 2011, said the alleged victim instigated sex between them and made no objections.

Asked by his QC Ian Winter if he thought he and the woman could have a relationship, he said: "I sort of came away from that evening thinking this could be really good, this could be the start of something. 

"I wasn't looking for a girlfriend but she is somebody I have known for a long time and that there could be something in this." 

When he did not hear back from her weeks later, after she had gone to meet a man in New York, he said: "I thought it's a pity and that she had got together with somebody else or just blown me out, it's a pity. 

"I thought we would meet up again and be friends after a certain time had elapsed and just go back to being friends." 

Traviss, appearing in the witness box in his trademark black collared jacket and slick-backed hair, said he was shocked when the police got in touch in April with a sex allegation against him. 

He was not initially told who had made the complaint and said he thought it might have been a stalker inventing an allegation. 

The complainant has said she stayed at Traviss's flat because she was so drunk she could not stand up, and a black cabbie would not have driven her home. 

CCTV footage from Jet Black - the last nightclub they drank in on the night - showed her walking to the toilet unaided. 

And a clip was also played to the jury in which she leaves the club walking with the defendant, whose brothers Richard and Anthony owned the establishment.

The complainant alleges she woke once in bed to find Traviss raping her. 

She has said he stopped when asked and they then had a glass of wine on the sofa.

But she alleged she woke a second time to find him attacking her again. 

She told the jury it was like a dream and she passed out because she was so tired. 

She has also said she could not have left his flat because she was exhausted and could not find her knickers.

The trial heard that she did not initially know for sure she had been raped but became clearer about it later on. 

Traviss's case is they had sex but stopped when the complainant said "we shouldn't be doing this" because they were friends.
